Court Counselor
Steers Youths Right
Susan Nanney has started work
as Polk County's first home-
based court counselor for
juveniles in trouble.
Before Nanney started Feb. 1
at her office in the Stearns
Gymnasium in Columbus,
juveniles in trouble in Polk
County were the concern of the
Hendersonville County court
counselor
Nanney, who turns 24 on
Monday, is a recent graduate of
Western Carolina University
where she majored in psychology
and minored in criminal justice.
She said she is currently
working with eight juveniles in
Polk ages 9 to 16, and has nine
more cases going to court soon
Although most are under her
supervision for truancy
problems, Nanney said she works
with youths in two legal

Block House
Race Card
Inspired by balmy weather, the
Tryon Riding & Hunt Club this
week announced the card for its
annual spring rite, the Block
House Races.
With race day again scheduled
for the third Saturday in April,
the 21st. this year’s card will
feature the famed Block House
Steeplechase with a purse of
$20,000 With the distance
increased to 2'i miles, this 44th
renewal of the classic contest will
remain as "one of the toughest
races on the circuit"
At 2 3/8 miles over brush is the
Doncaster, a claiming race for
amateur riders who will vie for
shares of $7,500. Also at 2 3/8
miles and billed as races for
maidens, or non-winners, are the
NCNB with a purse of $7,500 and
the Hunting Country Cup.

also a memorial to Carter P.
Brown, who pioneered hunt
racing in Tryon, and the Hunting
Country Cup is in honor of Dr

at 2 ‘i miles. The total purse for
the race meeting is $45,000 In
keeping with recent custom, all
races are over fences, none on the
flat. In addition to the race

Meshawn Key To
Participate In
Miss National
Pre-Teen Pageant

Meshawn Key, is a finalist in
the Miss North Carolina National
Pre-Teen Pageant to be held
March 24 and 25, 1990 at the
Holiday Inn North, Raleigh,
North Carolina. Meshawn will go
through personal interviews, a
talent performance which will be
singing, etc Meshawn is a fourth
grader at Tryon Elementary She
is the daughter of Ms. Stenetta
Canady of Tryon
New Arrival
Tom and Rhonda O'Connor of
Columbus are parents of a
daughter. Heather Nicole, born
Feb. 21 at Pardee Hospital in
Hendersonville.
She weighed 7 lbs. 3 ozs She
has a sister, Kim. who is 11 years
old.
