A jury on Thursday acquitted
Exxon Valdez skipper Joseph
Hazelwood of being drunk and
reckless in connection with the
national’s worst oil spill, but
convicted him of a minor charge
of negligent discharge of oil.
“I’m presient of the United
States and I'm not going to eat
any more broccoli,” President
George Bush said Thursday in a
news conference at the White
House. “My family is divided,”
Bush revealed. “For the broccoli
vote out there,” said Bush,
“Barbara loves broccoli....She
eats it all the time herself.”
State Democratic Chairman
Lawrence Davis has announced
that Congressman Steny H.
Hoyer of Maryland will be the
featured speaker at the annual
Jefferson-Jackson dinner on Sat.,
April 28th in Raleigh.
Thursday at 3 p.m., the Lanier
Library will present a slide
illustra'ted talk. “Designs of the
Decade,” by Michael McCue at
the Mural Room of the Fine Arts
Center.

Dr. Donald Gilbert
Dr. Donald Roscoe Gilbert, 72,
of 120 Lanier Drive, Lake Lanier
area, Tryon, died March 22 in
Spartanburg Regional Medical
Center.
A native of Polk County, he was
the husband of Edith Shehan
Gilbert and the son of the late
Claude and Meldora Head
Gilbert.
He was a captain in the U.S.
Army during the Korean War, in
which he served as regimental
surgeon. In his early years, he
was a general practicioner in the
Polk County area and later
returned to Johns Hopkins
Medical School where he
specialized in urology. He taught
urology at the Medical College of
Virginia.
He practiced medicine in
Charleston. W.Va., for 22 years
before semi-retiring to Tryon in
1972 where he continued to
practice for 12 years. He was a
fellow of the American College of
Surgeons.
He was a member of Tryon First
Baptist Church and the Tryon
Rotary Club where he was named
as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was
first married to the late Connie
Mae Evans Gilbert.
Also surviving are two
daughters, Julie Wood of
Winston-Salem, and
JeanAnnTrull of Greensboro;
two sons, Donald Gilbert of San
Diego, Calif., and Steve Gilbert of
Mill Spring; four stepsons. John
W. Lankford of Spartanburg,
S.C., Mark W. Henson of
Spindale, Steve and Joel Henson

State Finalist
Beth E. Beamer is a 1990 state
finalist in the North Carolina
American Coed Pageant, which
will be held at the end of June in
Raleigh.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Paul G. Beamer of
Columbus.

Hardee’s East-West
Basketball Game
The annual Blue-White Allstar
basketball game is now Hardee’s
East West 1st Annual Allstar
Basketball Game. It will be held
at the Asheville Civic Center on
March 31st. The girls game will
begin at 7 p.m. and the boys at 9
p.m.
The East team consists of
Chase, E. Henderson, E.
Rutherford, Edneyville,
Madison, McDowell, Mitchell,
Mtn. Heritage, N. Buncombe,
Owen, Polk County, Reynolds, R-
S Central, T.C. Roberson The
West team consists of Andrews,
Asheville, Brevard, Enka,
Erwin, Hayesville,
Hendersonville, Murphy, Pisgah,
Robbinsville, Rosman, Smoky
Mtn., Swain, Tuscola and W.
Henderson.
The game features the
outstanding seniors in Western
North Carolina and is co
sponsored by the Rhododendron
Civitan Club. All proceeds of the
game go to help the mentally
handicapped of WNC.
Named to the East girls team
was Shelia Anderson of Polk
County, and to the boys team was
Carlo Wilkins of Polk County.
Shelia is 5’7” and has an 18 point
average. Carlo is 6’3” and has a
22 point average.
Executive Board
The Executive Board of the
Green Blades Garden Club will
meet Thursday, March 29th at 10
a.m. in the Mural Room of the
Tryon Fine Arts Center.
