The weather Tuesday: high 80,
low 44, hum, 58 percent.
A run-off election seems likely
between two Democratic
contenders for the U.S. Senate
nomination. The winner will face
Jesse Helms, who easily defeated
his challengers in Tuesday's
primary
Former Charlotte Mayor
Harvey Gantt led Mike Easley,
but fell short of the 40 percent
victory threshold Easley could
call for a June 5 runoff primary.
The Australians use a system
whereby voters make a “second
choice" vote along with their first
choice vote and, in cases like this,
the second choice votes are
tallied and a winner determined.
Sure seems like a good idea about
Charles Taylor defeated four
other Republican opponents in
Tuesday's primary and will face
incumbent Democrat James
McClure Clark for the 11th N.C.
Congressional District seat in the
U S House of Representatives
Taylor is a developer and

Sheriff Boyce Carswell easily
overcame challenger Donald
Splawn, 1,164 to 444, in the
Democratic primary Tuesday in
Polk County. Carswell has no
Republican opposition in the fall
and is almost a shoe-in for his
fifth four-year term.
The Republican nominees for
the Board of Commissioners are
not so lucky They have won the
right to ran a campaign for the
general election in November
against three Democratic party
nominees: incumbent Rachel
Ramsey, past commissioner
Carson Deck, and newcomer Sue
Cochran.
Only 32 votes separated the top
vote getter from the low vote
getter in the Republican primary
for Board of Commissioners.
Tim McCormack of Green
Creek was the top vote-getter
with 516, winning the Coopers
Gap and Green Creek No. 9
precincts.
Incumbent Ken Faulkner was

Tryon No 3, White Oak,
