Editorial writers across North Carolina were debating the merits of Mike Easley's decision to call for a run-off election with Harvey Gantt last week. The winner, of course, will claim Ute real prize: a chance to duke it out with Sen. Jesse Helms The Hendersonville Times- News, a New York Times Co. newspaper, said Friday that former Charlotte Mayor Gantt is the politician with greater stature and more chance of beat ing Jesse, an outcome they favor. Easley they say, is “inexperienced and unseasoned,” although a bright, rising star If he loses, they say he will still have benefited from the exposure and will look good for Lt. Gov in 1992, or possibly Congress. In any event, the Times-News editorial board argues that either man will go into the general election stronger for having won the run-off The Charlotte Observer editorial writers worried more that Easley risks all his marbles Continued On Back Page Thrift Shoo Suoport For St. Luke’s Pictured on Trade Street, Tryon, is the Thrift Shop of St Luke's Hospital Auxiliary.
