President Bush's Budget
Director Richard G. Darman
said Sunday that the Bush
administration would consider
tax hikes only in exchange for a
line-item veto, a measure which
would give the president more
direct control to cut spending.
Two American servicemen
were killed near a Philippines
airbase Sunday on the eve of
talks on extending the lease of
U.S. Military bases there.
U.S. and Philippine officials
say the United States may have
to give up at least one of its two
huge bases over the next ten
years due to increasing
opposition.

Phillipines and its military wing,
the New People's Army, have
threatened attacks on Americans
to protest the U.S. military

Saluda Adopts
Water Policy
Saluda City council adopted a
policy Tuesday that explains the
conditions under which the city
will provide water and sewer
services and street maintenance
for residents of Saluda
subdivisions.
"We have never had an
ordinance of this nature," Mayor
Nolan Pace said Friday. “Of
course, we are anticipating some
growth, and we'd like to have
orderly growth and place the
responsibility where it should
be.”
The Pi-page policy, which
want into effect immediately
after its adoption, states that
Saluda will provide water and
sewer services to subidivions
within its city limits when it is
“within the best interest of the
city and the property owners.”
The policy also states that the
city will maintain water and
sewer systems within city
subdivision developer or
systems are built to standards set
by the city.
The city will not agree to
maintain any subdivision's water
or sewer system that is not
complete, not in working order
and not built to the city's
standards, the policy states.
Likewise, the city will not
agree to maintain any city
subdivision’s streets unless the
subdivision's entire street system
is established, paved and built to
the city's standards.

Elects Officers
Commander Elwood Martin,
of the Polk County Memorial Post
No. 250 of the American Legion
was unanimously elected to the
office of vice-commander of the
24th American Legion District
The election of District officers
was held at the Host Post No. 2
Asheville on the 12th of May. The
24th District Encompasses,
Buncombe, Yancey, Henderson.
Madison, McDowell and Polk
Counties.
The election of officers for the
coming year was held during the
regular meeting of Polk County
Memorial Post No. 250 of the
American Legion on 1st Day of
May. The following officers were
elected: George Scofield —
Commander; Howard B. Greene
— Vice-Commander; Jim
Shannon — Adjustant & Finance
Officer; Jerry Ramsey — Sgt. at
Arms.
Installation of Officers will be
on the 3rd day of July, 1990 —

John Anthony, son of Mr and
Mrs J E. Anthony of Landrum
was a member of the Erskine
College Collegiathon team which
was recoginzed recently as
winner of the 1989-90 Carolinas
Collegiathon. He is a graduate of
Landrum High School and is a
senior history major at Erskine.
