Polk Lands
Several Qualifiers
Polk County wound up 11th in
the men’s competition of the 2-
A/l-A Western Sectional high
school track meet Friday at
Hendersonville. Newton-Conover
won.
The top six finishers in each
event qualified for the regional.
Kyle Cunningham, who tied for
second in the high jump, and
Shea Watson, who ran 4th in the
800m run, qualified from among
the boys.
Landrum Students
Receive Scholarships
Two Landrum Junior High
Students have been awarded
partial scholarships to the
SCOPE (South Carolina
Operation Physics Experience)
at the University of South
Carolina at Spartanburg The
students are Jodi Christopher
and Elizabeth Lawrence. This
one-week program will allow
students to experiment and
investigate many physics topics
such as magnets, magnetism,
color and vision, simple
machines, and astronomy.
Students will have a chance to
work in college laboratories, both
indoors and outdoors
The program is sponsored by
the Spartanburg Science
Education Center at USCS and
funded by the South Carolina
Commission of Higher

Mr. and Mrs. Edward McAbee
of Mill Spring announce the
engagement of their daughter.
Kathy Elizabeth to Tony M.
Priester, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Buddy Herbert of Columbus.
Kathy will be a 1990 graduate of
Polk Central on June 1st.
Tony is a 1989 graduate of Polk
Central. He is now attending
Isothermal Community College
and will be graduating in August.

The W.N.C. Society for
Genealogical Research will meet
Sat , 26th May at 9:45 a m in the
Henderson County Library
Auditorium. Election of officers
will be held and members are
encouraged to attend and make
suggestions for future programs.

Sheehan Receives
Doctorate Degree
Reginald Stokes Sheehan, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Stokes K.
Sheehan of Campobello, S.C.
received his Ph D in Political
Science from the University of
South Carolina.
Dr Sheehan has accepted a
position as assistant professor at
the University of North Texas in
Denton. Texas. His fields of
specialization are public law and
the federal courts.
He is married to the former
Tracie Gettys, daughter of Mr
and Mrs Robert W. Gettys of
Spartanburg, S.C., who received
her Ph d in Chemistry from the
University of Carolina. Dr.
Tracie Sheehan's field of
specialization is analytical
chemistry and she will be
working in Dallas, Texas.

Hendersonville 4
The Polk County Wolverines
baseball team defeated Hender
sonville 5 to 4 at Harmon Field on
Friday.
Tim McCurry, the winning
pitcher, struck out 11 and allowed
only 4 hits. Kelly Ruff and Kevin
Fisher of the Wolverines each
had home runs.
In the first inning Henderson
ville had 3 runs on 1 hit and Polk
County had 2 runs on 2 hits. In the
Sth inning Hendersonville had 1
run on 1 hit and P.C. had 3 runs on
4 hits. In the 7th inning,
Hendersonville had 2 hits with no
runs.
