The people of the U S S R are
going to get a chance to vote —
really vote — in the nation's first
national referendum.
They must decide whether or
not to shift the nation to a market
economy, a move which would
cost tens of millions of jobs,
double food prices and eventually
allow private ownership of most
businesses.
The average Western North
Carolina retiree household
spends $16,971 a year on routine
items, a study by the UNC-
Asheville Center for Creative
Retirement found. That's before
major purchases, such as homes,
appliances and vehicles.
"It (attracting retirees) is a
nice addition to the economy
which you don't have to do a lot
for,” said Bill Haas, the UNCA
sociologist who conducted the
study.
With an industrial plant, for
instance. Haas said a community
must spend tax dollars to provide
roads, sewer and water lines and
other utilities.

Honors Its Heros
Monday, May 28, Memorial
Day, features Polk County High
School Band and N.C. Senator
Bob Carpenter of the 29th
Senatorial District.
The Columbus Post of Veterans
of Foreign Wars (VFW Post 9116)
announced it's plan for this
Memorial Day at the Polk
Memorial Cemetery located on
Hwy. 108 just opposite the
Western Steer Restaurant. The
ceremony will commemorate
those who served their Country in
time of need — those who made
the supreme sacrifice, those
permanently hospitalized, and
those who. while somewhat
mobile, carry the scars and
disablements of battle service.
The Polk Central High School
Band will begin the ceremony at
11 a m. on Monday by rendering

For Sixth Year

Civic League
Luncheon June 1
The Landrum Civic League will
hold its annual luncheon on
Friday, June 1 at noon at the
Civic Center. This year's event
will be a bring-a-salad-to-share.
Guests at the luncheon will be
Jodie Lashua, Landrum
Librarian, and Dixie Page, story-
teller, who is also librarian at
Woodruff.
Dixie Page, also co-founder of
Woodruff's Stone Soup story-
telling festival, will entertain
with a series of tales for which
she has become well known
Democrat Women
The regular monthly meeting
of the Polk County Democrat
Women will be Mon , May 28 at 8
p.m. at the Democratic
Headquarters in Columbus. All
women are invited
