Weather Wednesday: high 79,

Tonight. Saturday night and
Sunday afternoon, the Tryon
Theater is bringing a classic
picture to the screen, "Cat On A
Hot Tin Roof,” with Paul
Newman as Brick and Elizabeth
Taylor as Maggie “The Cat."
A lot of towns the size of Tryon
don’t have the luxury of viewing
just-released hits at a theater
within walking distance.
It's not been a real money-
making proposition for theater
owners to try to stay open in more
rural areas, as big city, multi
screen, air-conditioned theaters
have drawn the crowds.
But Tryon Theater owners Bill
and Anne Crowell have overcome
the odds and done just that,
running projectors and selling
popcorn most nights instead of
relaxing at home.
All well and good, except for
the hole in the roof. The roof on
the theater building must be
repaired soon, but the cost of the

breaks the Crowells' backs.

School Budget Turns
Into Numbers Game
The proposed budget for Polk
County Schools has turned into a
numbers game between the
Board of Education and the
County Board of Commissioners.
The Polk County Schools
proposed 1990-91 budget requests
$2,138,470, broken down into
$1,979,920 for current expenses
and $158,550 for capital outlay.
However, the Polk County
Manager’s proposed county
budget provides only $1,685,132.
County Manager Steve Wyatt
says that his proposal gives the
schools a 4% increase over last
year's budget. Whereas, Superin
tendent Dr. James Causby says
that the county proposal is a 5%
decrease from last year's budget.
Both budget makers arrived at
correct percentages, but based
on different bottom line figures.
Wyatt's bottom line concerns
only the cost of current expenses.
Last year the Polk County
Commissioners allocated
$1,620,320 for current expenses.
Wyatt’s proposal for the 1990-91
fiscal year allots $1,685,132,
which correctly represents a 4%
increase over last year's current
expense allotment.
Dr. Causby’s negative 5%
figure is based on total county
funds allocated for 1989-90 fiscal
year In overall county funds for
the schools, which includes
capital outlay, the 1988-89 budget
was a 9% cut from the previous
year’s budget, and the 1989-90
