Soviet leader Mikhail

‘‘They even have a similar
sense of humor. They make fun of
things. They tease each other.”
But there was no teasing on the
issue sof German reunification,
Lithuanian independence, or

Tryon Fire Fund
Tax Hike Proposed
Tryon taxpayers will see a 1-
cent increase this year for the
Fire Fund if the Town Board of
Commissioners approves the
budget proposed by Town
Manager Barry G. Richards.
But this may be the last year
that such low tax increases
occur, Richards wrote to the
board in his budget message. He
said the cost of state and federal
programs is being borne more
and more by local government.
The general fund revenues this
year will increase by $105,256
even without a tax increase
because the tax base in the town
has grown by $5 million,
Richards said in an interview.
The tax rate, 39 cents per $100,
will raise $259,709. The rest of the
general fund revenues, which
Richards estimates at $778,783,
will come primarily from interest
on investments, utilities
franchise taxes, intangible
personal property taxes, local
option sales taxes, ABC net
revenues and refuse collection
fees.
The Fire Fund this year is
projected to have revenues of
$126,702, Richards wrote, based
on an increase in the first tax
from 6 cents to 7 cents per $100
valuation.
Richards said he and Fire Chief
Jimmy Lankford are aiming at
winning a better fire insurance
rating for the town when the next
recertification occurs in 1994.
In order to do this, he said a
new equipment truck and tanker
