The weather Tuesday: high 83,
low 53, hum. 54 percent.
There was optimism in the air
after Mikhail Gorbachev met
with leaders of the Baltic
Republics Tuesday.
The leaders of Lithuania,
Latvia and Estonia were taking
home compromise proposals that
could end the political deadlock
over secessionist movements and
the two-month economic
crackdown on Lithuania.
Gorbachev called for a new
Soviet federation that would treat
all republics as “sovereign
states.”
Baptist fundamentalists
captured the presidency of their
convention for the 12th straight
year Tuesday, electing the Rev.
Morris Chapman of Wichita
Falls, Tex.
David Dennis, an insurance
consultant and 10-year member
of the Spartanburg County
Council, won the GOP primary
and will face incumbent county
council Chairman Lach Hyatt in
November.

Scholarship Established
At Isothermal
A scholarship in honor of W. H.
“Shorty” McDonald of Tryon has
been established at Isothermal
Community College by his sister,
Mildred McDonald Furches, and
her husband D. L. “Doc”
Furches.
The scholarship in the amount
of $450 per year honors “Shorty”
McDonald’s contributions to
family, friends and community
as an educator, businessman and
political leader. It will be
awarded annually to a Polk
County resident.
“Since my husband, Doc,
founded and directed the Adult
Education Department at
Sandhills Community College,
Southern Pines, North Carolina’s
first comprehensive community
college,” says Mrs. Furches, “we
felt it fitting to honor ‘Shorty’ by
supporting Isothermal’s Polk
County program.”
“Shorty” McDonald, the son of
the late Monroe and Ada Moore
McDonald, for whom Adaville
Baptist Church, Spindale, is
named, grew up in the McDonald
farm which is adjacent to the
College Spindale campus.
After graduating from Boiling
Springs High School,
Incorporated (a boarding

Antique Auto
Show Sunday
The 16th Annual Polk County
Jaycees Antique Auto Show will
be held at Harmon Field Sunday,
June 17th. This show draws
entrants from several
surrounding states and provides
local residents a chance to "walk
down memory lane,”
reminiscing about their own cars
of yesteryear.
Thermal-Belt area residents
are encouraged to attend
anytime between the registration
hour of 9 a.m. and closing at 4
that afternoon. Walk-in ticket
cost is $2 according to an ad.
Proceeds are used by the local
Jaycees to further their work
throughout our community.
Though the show’s title
indicates antiques only, the show
has opened up to a much wider
variety of cars and trucks,
including customized and street
rods — a lot of glistening chrome.
And on special display will be
Richard Petty’s 1986 NASCAR
Pontiac and Kyle Petty’s 1986
NASCAR Thunderbird, along
with the National Champion
“Superbird.”
Local residents are asked to
support the work of the Jaycees
through their attendance, while
having a good time too
Concession stand will be
available for snacks. — Reporter
