Answer to Communication
from George Scofield on the front
page of today's Bulletin. Read
Scofield’s letter first.
Dear George:
Thanks very much for your
letter, I appreciate the tone and
the earnest way in which you’re
approaching this.
The rhetoric on both sides of
this issue — mine own included —
has been charged with emotion,
and you have not succumbed.
Bully for you. I wish you could be
cloned about 4,000 times and
register all 4,000 to vote.
First, off. if you are confused
even after much obvious study
and thought, think how much
more so the casual observer is
confused. Can we rush into
cutting local support for our
schools by 20 percent in such a
state?
All along. I have tried to argue
that Folk County — we, the
people — could easily have seen
years ago that the county would
have to pick up the slack after
merger properly did away with

Communication
Dear Jeff.
I've read your Curb Reporter
Column of last Friday with much
interest. It seems that I'm again
lackinginformatontowit. ..
The County Commissioner’s
are cutting the budget 20% from
what it was four years ago. I
thought that they were cutting
this Board of Education’s budget
about 5%.
You say you believe that family
counseling is needed. I agree
that’s why I'm trying to get out
the facts, that's what counseling
is. Understanding.
I feel hurt tht you implied that
some of us who think we might be
over spending or wasting money
are trying to fool someone. I
thought that it happens
sometimes, at least I do.
Singling out Steven D. Wyatt as
the bad boy, is not only wrong but
unfair. He has a job to do. ]
Do you want me to think that
those Commissioners that are
opposed have a vendetta against
the schools? Implying this is also
unfair. They have a right to their
opinion right or wrong.
What docs the EMS have to do
with the schools budget? I don’t
understand!
People who sign petitions
without knowing what the cost
might be lack understanding I
have , many drea ms that I cannot
afford and maybe every penny
the School Board wants is one
Who knows?
Saying that we on fixed
incomes are for or against the
budget is unfounded. Just like the

Black Bear
Visits Polk
A black bear attempted to aid
Polk County with its solid waste
problems this past weekend,
tipping trash cans from Sunny
View to the South Carolina
border.
Mattie Wilson was finishing up
some work in her kitchen
Saturday morning when she
heard some commotion outside
the window.
“I heard a bang, bang, bang,”
Wilson said. "Real close to the
window where I was washing
dishes.” She walked out the
kitchen door, and there, just six
feet away, was a fully grown
black bear.
He never turned his head to
look at her. Wilson said, but just
started leaping away.
“I ran inside yelling to Charlie,
‘A bear! A bear! Please come,
it’s a bear!”'
Charlie Wilson had his shoes
off, but scampered out the front
door and attempted to follow the
frightened animal through a pine
grove.
Mattie Wilson got onto the
phone to warn Thaxton and Sadie
Holbert. While she was on the
phone with Sadie, sure enough,
the bear was heard rummaging
the Holberts’ trash cans.
“I came back in the house and
had to fall on the bed," Mattie
Wilson said Monday. “I'm still
scared to think how that thing
could've got up on my back."
Polk County Sheriff Boyce
Carswell said calls about bear
sightings started coming into his
