A note from the Curb Reporter: When I first moved to Tryon to take over this grand old newspaper, many people asked me to begin to take stands on issues. I was reluctant, and did not plan to do so until much later in my tenure here. I don t think I would have even on the school budget issues if it had been presented outright as the major cut in local school funding that it was. If the board of commissioners had said, “We’re singling the schools out for significant cuts,” and explained clearly why, there would have been no need to do anything but report the facts. But the facts were obscured in talk of “an increase,” and the situation cried out for a more honest interpretation — call it comment or opinion. I shared my opinions on the school budget six times, twice before the public hearing, three times up until the budget vote, and once after. It will be a long time before I’ll have another say about this matter or anything else. A long Continued On Back Page The Executive Council of District II of the N.C. Retired School Personnel met at Allen’s Cafeteria in Forest City June 13. Representatives from six counties attended. President Dorothy Baldwin announced that a summer workship will be held at the Holiday Inn in Hendersonville July 10 at 9 a.m. The annual fall district meeting will be held Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Marion. Penny Kessler, First Merge Penny Kessler Realty of Tryon announces the merger of her office with First Real Estate of Columbus. By combining our businesses we will be better able to serve our clients, customers and the community,” states Kessler. Penny started Kessler Realty in 1982 after working for four years with another Tryon real estate firm. Penny and her family came to Tryon in 1977 from the Chicago area where she grew up. Angela, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Frazier of Landrum, attended Converse College. Her name will appear in the All-AmericanScholar directory, which is published nationally. There will be a shotgun wing ding at 9 a.m. Tuesday the 26th followed by luncheon. Sundae Sunday At Tryon Youth Center On Sunday, June 24th from 3 to 6 p.m., there will be a special event at the Tryon Youth Center. Anyone in grades 7 to 12 is invited to come enjoy the fun. It will be a day of outdoor fun and activities with a volleyball championship and other fun events. To top off the day, there will be a “make your own sundae” bar set up to cool all appetites. Grades 7 to 12 are encouraged to come out and see your friends and enjoy the day. Singing Sunday At Pleasant Valley Pleasant Valley Free Will Baptist Church, Lynn, will have an afternoon singing Sunday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m. Guests will be the Heavenaires from Cowpens. Rev.
