An earthquake in northern Iran
early Thursday is believed to
have killed at least 25,000 people
and injured thousands of others.
The quake demolished scores of
villages and towns and buried
thousands of people in their
homes.
The House of Representatives
on Thursday rejected a
constitutional amendment to
protect the American Flag from
desecration, heeding opponents
who said it would risk damage to
the Bill of Rights.
The Supreme Court ordered an
end to political patronage
Thursday, ruling that federal,
state and local government jobs
generally may not be awarded
based on party affiliation. The
justices by a 5-4 vote, said
constitutionally protected rights
are violated when people are
denigned government
jobs,promotions or transfers
because of politically partisan
reasons.
N.C. Gov. Jim Martin endorsed
a Senate budget plan Thursday
that calls for no new taxes this
year, but asked legislators to go
on record supporting a 1-cent

Lions Meet Tuesday
The Tryon Lions Club will meet
Tuesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. at the
Western Steer Steak House in
Columbus.
John Clark will be in charge of
the program.
A&P Entered
Tryon A&P Store was entered
early Friday morning. The

lock off the exit door and entered
the building. A torch was used on
the safe but the burglars did not
reach where the money was kept.
Elbert Carpenter, manager, said
that the safe was destroyed, but
no money was taken. At press
time Friday it had not been
determined if anything had been

At Polk Library
Storytime at Polk County
Public Library this Thursday will
feature J. Thaddeous Toad in a
film adaption of part of Kenneth
Graham’s “Wind in the Willows."
J. -Thaddeous Toad, the
incurable adventurer, embarks
on one of his well known ventures
in this animated work that has
entertained all ages since it first
appeared in 1949.
Storytime is being offered each
Thursday at 4:30 at Polk County
Public Library through August 9
All children ages 3 and up are
invited. No preregistration
required.

Lanier Library Receives
John Landrum, Memorial
New in the Lanier Library is
the four-volume set of books
called the “Heritage of Music,”
given in memory of John G.
Landrum, Jr., by Ellen and Louis
Pettit.
The books, published by the
Oxford University Press in 1989
and written in non-technical
language by 55 distinguished
scholars, provide a survey of
musical styles from the Middle
Ages to the present. Each volume
contains 525 illustrations (more
than 200 in color).
The volumes is in the set are
titled “Classical Music and Its
Origins," “The Romantic Era,”
“The Nineteenth Century
Legacy," and “Music in the
Twentieth Century.”

Tim Jackson OK
The family of Tim Jackson in
Green Creek report that Tim has
called and is alright. Tim is
stationed aboard the U.S.S.
Midway which suffered an
explosion and a fire last Tuesday
in waters near Japan. He is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Jackson.
Elects Officers
The 12th Annual Meeting of the
Gillette Woods Assoc, was held
June 14th in the Fellowship Hall
of the Congregational Church.
Following a review of the
activities of the Board of
Directors during the 1989-90 year
by President R Peyton Tabb, the
slate of new Board members was
unanimously approved. They
are: William Bley, Patti Ausum,
George Dorsch, Jeanne Parker,
Kay Doelling and Janet Cannon.
Hold-over directors are: Peyton
Tabb, Pat Rinker, Glenn Webb.
Nathan Baker and Wray Monroe.
Mrs. Lisa Wilson, Director of
the Polk County Emergency
Medical Service spoke to those
present, detailing the services
rendered to the county’s citizens,
the qualifications of their staff
and explaining the verhicles and
equipment available. A life
support ambulance was on sight
for inspection and
demonstration.
