Wyatt said Wednesday morning. Wyatt filled in for Solid Waste Manager David Draughn as the speaker at a Tryon Thermal Belt Chamber of Commerce coffee- get-together. He told the approximately 50 business people gathered at George’s Restaurant & More that the flat-fee schedule adopted by the county “goes beyond the constitutional authority of the State of North Carolina.” The fees are “essentially uncollectable,” Wyatt said. He learned this after Sen. Bob Carpenter wrote him this week regarding special legislation Polk County had sought allowing it to enforce collection of the fees. Carpenter enclosed a memo from Senate legal counsel describing the constitutional issues involved and outlining several legal options the county might pursue. Wyatt said the Board of Commissioners planned to meet again Friday morning. He said at that time he and Draughn would present a plan to install a $25,000 scale at the landfill and begin charging all trash haulers by weight as they enter. 20c Per Copv 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Joseph House recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
