The new task force will examine the issues around impacts of highway building in western North Carolina. The first specific issue that the task force has identified is the proposed 1-26 extension (Corridori from Asheville to its connection with 1 81 in Tennessee. This will traverse Madison and Buncombe counties. The task force’s effort will include research on the social, economic, and environmental impacts on the local communities that will be affected by the proposed interstate. West Asheville and Leicester will be affected by the proposed four- lane connection from Woodfin to the present junction of I-26 and I- 40. Madison County communities will also be affected. Task force members have grave concerns about the proposed interstate. They intend to educate themselves and hope to involve the public directlv in commenting on the probable impacts. There are also concerns that the Department of Transportation more thoroughly involve the public in the decision- making process. Ed Hardin and Chip Smith are co-chairs, and Rusty Sivils is the Secretary of the new task force. — Reporter Read The Bulletin For Local News
