The Polk County Republicans
will have their monthly meeting
on Thursday, July 12, at 7:30
p.m. at the Headquarters on
Peak Street in Columbus. All
Republicans are invited to attend
and bring a friend.
A committee to nominate
officers for the coming year will
be appointed by the Republican
Executive Committee. —

The 1990 Polk County Junior
League (13 year olds) Allstars
were named at the annual
Baseball Awards Ceremony and
Picnic at Harmon Field. Chosen
for the Allstar team were:

Fisher, Matt Ingraham, Travis
Lindsey, Penny Lindsey, Bobby

Alcohol And Drugs
The following students from
Landrum High School attended
the Teen Institute on Alcohol and
Drugs al Presbyterian College
June 24-29: Denise Johnson,
Dewayne Johnson, Sonta
Simpson and Nikki Fowler.
New Heart Assn. Director
John M. “Jack" Leon, a Tryon-
area resident since 1975, was
named a director of the Polk
County Unit of the American
Heart Association by the Board of
Directors at its June meeting.
Chairman of the Golf
Committee of the Red Fox
Country Club, Mr. Leon will
assist Michael McCue, chairman
of the Heart Association’s annual
golf tournament, operate the
Association’s Heart-Healthy
Tournament for men there on
Oct. 29.
A philosophy and math major
and graduate from Trinity
College in 1938, Mr. Leon was
first employed in the textile
business in New York City.
He entered the Horse Cavalry
of the US Army in WWII, actually
reporting for duty mounted on
horseback. Following OCS he was

Senior League
Allstars
The 1990 Polk County Senior
League (14 and 15 year olds)
Allstars and team winners were
recognized at the annual
Baseball Awards Ceremony and
Picnic at Harmon field. The
Green Creek Athletics, sponsored
by the Green Creek Ruritan, won
the League Championship. The
Sunny View Cardinals, sponsored
by Burgess Refuse, were second.
Other sponsored teams included
the Braves sponsored by Bomar
Industries.
The 1990 Allstars are: John
Maddox, Eric Lookadoo, Jason
Kilgore, Todd Moore, Kip Stokes.
Alan Edwards, David Eckert,
Chad Rickman, Travis Lowe,
Shannon Randolph, Brian
Grotchowski and Jerry Lockhart.
Player of the Year awards went
to Allstars Larry Fagan and
Kelly Ruff.
Managing the Allstar team this
year is Tom Horne.
Their first game was Monday
evening at Harmon Field against
Rutherfordton. Any donations to

Mrs. Penny Cardwell a
teacher at Landrum High School
was presented a plaque recently
by Landrum Lion Bob Walker for
her work with the Quest (Skills
for Adolescence) program in the
seventh grade at Landrum High
School, Mrs. Cardwell is Junior
high counselor at the school
