The weather Wednesday: It
was the hottest day of the year so
far, according to Robert
Dedmondt’s official
thermometer — 98 degrees. The
night time temperature dropped
30 degrees, however, to a cool 68.
The humidity was 52 percent.
Cooler weather and thunder-
storms were predicted to end the
siege of hot weather this
weekend.
Hendersonville barely escaped
the imposition of water
restrictions thanks to a bit of rain
which fell last weekend, the city’s
water director said Thursday.
Our “green pledge" idea for
this Friday involves saving
water. Manufacturers are
making toilets which flush much
less water these days, and that’s
great.
But the millions of us with older

Motorcycle Chase
Began In Columbus
Columbus Police Chief Billy
Stepp attempted to stop a
motorcycle on Hwy. 108 near the
western Steer last Friday night.
The rider wasn’t wearing a
helmet and there was no tail
light.
However, it wasn’t until many
miles later, and not until after
two Highway Patrol cars were
damaged, that the motorcyclist
was stopped, Polk County Sheriff
Boyce Carswell said.
Michael Cantrell of Landrum
was charged with driving after
his license was revoked
speeding, failing to stop for a blue
light, and driving under the
influence, Carswell said.
Cantrell was injured when his
motorcycle sideswiped a police
cruiser and was treated at
Spartanburg Regional Hospital
for a broken ankle and some cuts
Carswell said.
Stepp and two highway patrol
men chased Cntrell from Colum
bus, down 1-26 to Landrum, down
Hwy. 14 to Collinsville Road to
Hwy. 9 toward Spartanburg
before finally stopping him near
the South Carolina border
Carswell said.
