NATO, clearing one of the most
difficult remaining hurdles to
German unification.
The White House hiked its fore
cast of next year's budget deficit
to $168.8 billion on Monday —
$231.4 billion if savings and loan
costs are counted.
A fire halfway up the Empire
State Building in New York on
Monday evening sent flames
billowing from shattered
windows and chased tourists
from the observation deck and
workers from throughout the
building. At least 35 people were
injured, most from inhaling
smoke.
“Little Mary Sunshine,” the
Tryon Youth Center production
will open Thursday at 8 p.m. at
the Fine Arts Center. If you have
ever attended one of the
performances you know what a
good job the young people do. If
you have not attended, go. Other
performances are Friday and
Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at
3p.m.
Steve Wyatt Day
The Polk County Commission
ers issued a proclamation
Monday making Friday, July
27th, “Steve Wyatt Day.”
Jeannie Martin, chairman, said
that the proclamation was in
recognition of Mr. Wyatt’s three
years of outstanding service.
July 27th will be Mr. Wyatt’s last
day on the job as he has resigned
to accept a position as assistant
County Manager of Catawba
County.
Story Hour
The Landrum Branch Library
storyhour will have a special
guest this week. Thursday, July
19, at 10 a.m., Mrs. Ethel Collins
will be our special storyhour
reader.
Mrs. Collins has been a
teacher at O. P. Earle
Elementary for many years. She
currently teaches kindergarten
there.
There will be one storyhour for
the months of July and August at
10a.m.

i Glenn Rhodes Named
Interim Manager
Glenn Rhodes, was named the
Interim County Manager
following an executive session
Monday afternoon by the Polk
County Commissioners. Mr.
Rhodes is a former Trvon Town
Manager and is now assistant
director of Isothermal Planning
and Development Commission.
County Manager Steven Wyatt
announced his resignation July
2nd. He will become Catawba
County Assistant County
Manager August 3rd.
Mr. Rhodes is a 1970 graduate
of Saluda High School and a 1974
graduate of Western Carolina
University with a B.S. in Social
Science. In 1974 he went to work
with Nello Teer Construction Co.
in Durham and in 1975 he joined
the Isothermal Planning and
Development Commission. He
became the Tryon Town Mana
ger in June 1982 and served until
August 1984 when he accepted the
position of Emergency Medical
Services Coordinator/Assistant
Director of Isothermal Planning
and Development Commission.
He was named winner of the
Distinguished Service Award in
1984 by the Polk County Jaycees.
He and his wife the former
Rebecca Staton of Saluda make
their home in the Pea Ridge
community.

Polk Commissioners
Won’t Appeal
The Polk County
Commissioners met in executive
session Monday afternoon but
decided not to appeal last
Wednesday’s jury decision
awarding the Polk County School
Board $117,500 more money. This
will cause a supplemental tax of
2.5e per $100 valuation. The
school board had filed suit
claiming the county had not
appropriated enough money for
the 1990-91 school year and had
asked for $235,000 more.
The Commissioners have until
July 23rd to file an appeal.
No One Hurt
Tryon Police Chief Nathan
Shields investigated a minor
accident Monday at 11:25 a.m. on
Pacolet Street An automobile
driven by Bradley Potter turned
left into the path of a car operated
by Fred Schairer. Chief Shields
said that Mr. Potter was charged
with failure to look before
turning. Approximately $350
damage was done to the Potter
vehicle and $390 damage to the
Schairer automobile.
Correction
The recent article in the
Henderesonville Times-News
reported that Dawn Walker was
the wife of Paul Walker This is
incorrect. She is the wife of
Vernon Walker. The article was
reprinted in the Bulletin
