The executive committee of the
Southern Baptist Convention,
meeting behind closed doors and
protected by five armed guards,
Tuesday voted to fire the two top
editors of Baptist Press, the
denomination’s news service.
The dismissals are expected to
inflame Baptist moderates and
widen the split that has developed
in the nation’s largest Protestant
denomination.
Two strong aftershocks struck
central Luzon Island in the
Phillipines early Tuesday and
more bodies were found two days
after a devastating earthquake.
The death toll topped 300.
Bo Jackson of the Kansas City
Royals hit three homers and
drove in seven runs but had to
leave Tuesday night’s game in
the sixth inning after injuring his
left shoulder while diving for a fly
ball.
James M. Meredith, a civil
rights pioneer who now works for
Sen. Jesse Helms, contended
Tuesday that a cadre of white
men control American blacks
and their leaders. Meredith made
the allegation when asked about a
charge he made Monday that
many of the delegates to last

“Kevin Can Wait”
Sunday, July 22 at After
Church-in-the-Park in the Tryon
High Open Air Gym, the film,
“Kevin Can Wait" will be shown
at 9 p.m.
Jim Peterson had big plans
about what he could accomplish
for God; as a Christian TV talk-
show host, or as the pastor of a
large thriving church, or even as
a pioneer missionary!
But in the middle of Jim’s big
dreams, he neglected people
around him — especially Kevin, a
teenager who always seems to be
left out of Jim’s “in” church
youth group. “What’s so
important about these people,”
he wonders. Jim Peterson is
about to find out. “Kevin Can
Wait” will make you laugh and
cry. It’s a film every Christian
should see, because each of us
can benefit from this prignant,
humorous presentation of a key
principle in the Christian life.
All teens and young people in
the area are invited to attend this
film. — Reporter
