It is reported that FBI agents photographed and recorded South Carolina lawmakers accepting money from a lobbyist in one of the Justice Department’s top white-collar crime investigations this year. Pete Rose, a baseball idol to millions and now a convicted felon, will end in federal prison. He was sentenced Thursday to five months in jail for failing to pay taxes on his take from illegal gambling and the sale of treasurered baseball memorabilia. He will perform 1,000 hours of community service and pay a $50,000 fine. This area goes by for weeks without major accidents. Everyone is still trying to recover from the two that happened here last week. On Wednesday a train hit a tractor-trailer on the main railroad crossing in Landrum and Thursday the accident at George’s Restaurant which involved a runaway car. We don't appreciate our emergency people until something like this happens. The EMS, doctors, nurses, rescue Continued On Back Page Car Hits George’s; Two Seriously Injured Two people were seriously injured Thursday evening when an automobile hit the entrance to George’s Restaurant in Tryon. Mrs. Charles (Alice) Cecil and LaRhett (Sandy) Stuart, both of Tryon were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital and transferred to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Treated at St. Luke's Hospital and released were Helen Stuart. Alice Kerhulas, Sarah Reid, Aaron and Ashton Giese. Aaron and Aston are grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. Theo Kerhulas. It was raining at the time of the accident which was approximately 7:30 p.m Mr. Cecil was driving the automobile which hit the entrance to George's. He apparently was going to pick up his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Stuart at the door of the restaurant. His car was parked directly in front of the door. According to eye witnesses the car sounded as if the accelerator stuck and plowed into the restaurant. Mr. Cecil got out of his car, got back into his vehicle and put it into reverse. Again the car sounded as if the accelerator was stuck. The car lurched backward, hit a car owned by Mr. and Mrs. Theo Kerhulas which was parked directly behind him This knocked the Kerhulas car into the side of the Tryon Auto Parts building. This caused a gas line to break and gas went into the Car Parts building and into Continued On Back Page Leave For Junior Olympics Seth Peoples of Tryon leaves today for the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he will participate in the National Junior Olympics. He qualified for the national finals in Raleigh on June 30 and July 1 when he competed against runners from Georgia, North Carolina, the Potomac Valley, South Carolina and Virginia. In the 3,000 meter run, Seth took third place with a time of 9:58.5 which qualified him for the finals. HE runs under the Henderson County Track Club He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Alan Peoples. If anyone would like to helo with expenses for the trip they may send a contribution to Tryon High School and mark it for Junior Olympics expenses. Cub Scout Day Camp The Cub Scout Day Camp will be held July 30 — August 1st at FENCE from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Scouts and non-scouts are welcome. Members Meet Tonight The July meeting for FOP. members will be tonight at 7 o'clock at the Polk County Sheriff’s Department. Elections will be held. Buys Home D & M Corporation has bought the Nancy and Harrison Bridgeman home at 200 Grady Ave. in Tryon. The plans call for remodeling the home. Soccer Meeting There will be soccer meeting for all coaches and other interested persons on Tuesday, July 24 at St. Luke’s Hospital at 7 p.m. Coaches will be assigned their teams.
