The weekend weather: Friday,
high 88, low 65, hum. 70 percent,
and 1.73 inches of rain was
recorded. Saturday, high 89, low
67. hum. 80 percent, and .25
inches of rain was recorded.
Sunday, high 89, low 65, hum. 77
percent, and .32 inches of rain
was recorded.
By 7 a.m. Monday, another 1.23
inches of rain had fallen.
Alice Cecil was listed in serious
condition at Spartanburg
Regional Medical Center
Monday, three days after the
accident at George’s Restaurant
& More in Tryon. LaRhett Stuart,
also a victim in that accident,
was listed in fair condition. No
further information was
available from the hospital.
Included in today’s Bulletin is
an obituary for Jayme Denise
Hurley of Asheville. Missing
since May and presumed
drowned, she was found last
Wednesday in a shallow grave in
a remote section of Pisgah
National Forest.
She has now been added to the
list of four slayings believed to
have been committed by a
Candler Man captured Friday in
High Point.
Hurley, was the daughter of
Mrs Mickey Hurley of Asheville,

Football Time!
Coach Butch Hopkins of the
Polk County Wolverines has
announced the following starting
dates for Varsity and Junior
Varsity football practice.
The Varsity, grades 10-12, will
meet July 30th at 6 p.m. at Polk
Central High School.
The Junior Varsity, grades 9
and 10, begin August 13th at 4
p.m. at Polk Central.
Any student who has not filled
out a physical form prior to
practice may pick up a form at
Stearns Education Center in
Columbus from Athletic Director
Geoffrey Tennant or call 894-3051.
Tent Revival
Gospel Tent Revival is being
held each night at 7:30 pm Hwy.
176, Landrum. The Rev. Bobby
Rape of Forest City is the
evangelist. There will be special
singing and preaching each
evening.
Model Railroaders
Elect Officers
Thursday night, July 19, the
Isothermal Model Railroad Club
held its annual dinner meeting at
the Western Steer in Columbus.
The membership elected the
following officers for the up and
coming year. President, Tom
Daniels of Rutherfordton; Sec.,
Joe Waters of Forest City;
Treas., Don Dillemuth of
Columbus. The club meets the
first Thursday evening of each

At Leadership
School
Phillip Placak
Phillip Placak, a rising ninth
grader at Tryon High School, is
presently attending the N.C.
Legislators’ School for Youth
Leadership Development at
Western Carolina University.
Phillip was nominated by his
teachers and principal at the
Tryon Middle School and his
application was one of 120
accepted for the three week
program
While at the school Phillip will
participate in various classes
specially designed to help N.C.’s
future leaders develop important
skills in communication, writing
and awareness.
Special events will also include
hikes, field trips and whitewater
rafting.
Phillip is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Rick Placak and the
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Placak.
Hairline Fracture
Aaron, 5 year old son of Mr. and
Mrs. Greg R. Giese (Laura
Kerhulas) of Dayton, Minn, was
one of those injured Thursday
night in the accident at George’s
Restaurant. He was taken to St.
Luke’s Hospital Thursday and
treated and released. He
complained of his leg Friday
morning and wouldn’t walk on it.
He was taken back to th ehospital
and an X-ray was taken of his leg
and a hairline fracture was
discovered in his shin bone. He
now has a cast on his leg.
Aaron is the grandson of Mr.
and Mrs. Theo Kerhulas.
New Arrival
Mr. and Mrs. David Page (the
former Sherry Horne) of Green
Creek are parents of a son.
Matthew James, born July 18, at
Mary Black Hospital in Spar
tanburg, S. C. He has an older
brother, Christopher David, who
is 4 years old.
Maternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Kenneth Horne of Green
Creek, great grandmother is
Mrs. Ladd Horne of Green Creek
Paternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. William Henry Page of
