There are two events planned to honor two of Polk County's top officials who have recently resigned their positions and soon will be on their way to new jobs. One is a secret. O.K., we're printing nearly 4,000 copies of this and that's not exactly how you go about keeping a secret, but with your help we're going to try. Folks at the courthouse today are going to snatch the Bulletin before County Manager Steve Wyatt and Solid Waste Manager David Draughn have a chance to see it. Now here’s the secret we want you to keep from them. There will be a surprise drop-in reception for Wyatt and Draughn today from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the commissioners meeting room. Anyone wishing these two departing county officials good luck, are invited to stop by. What isn’t a secret is a Dutch Treat luncheon at the Western Steer Family Steakhouse at noon to honor Wyatt and Draughn. The transaction was handled by Bettye Hawkins as Listing Agent and Peggy Dedman as selling agent, both of Coldwell Banker, Town & Country Realtors. Marine Completes Vehicle Course Marine Pvt. Kevin D. Barwell, a 1989 graduate of Polk Central High School of Mill Spring, recently completed the Motor Vehicle Operator Course. During the five-week course at Marine Corps Service Support Schools, Camp Lejeune, N.C., Barwell received classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction on the operation and capabilities of MArine Corps vehicles, defensive driving techniques, “rules of the road” and user-level preventive maintenance. He joined the Marine Corps in December 1989. Germany Rotary Exchange Youth Arrives In Tryon On July 26 Theda Knopfle, the Exchange Youth representing the Pirmasens, Germany Rotary Club, arrived in Tryon accompanied by Jennifer Thompson who is returning from a 5 week visit in Pirmasens. Jennifer, who is sponsored by the Tryon Rotary Club, has been the Exchange guest of the German Rotary Club and has made her home with the Knopfle family. The two girls, Theda (Tay da) Knopfle (Nuff la) and Jennifer flew to the States together from Frankfurt. Theda will be a guest in the Glenn 0. Thompson home on River Road for the first several weeks of her visit in the Tryon area. Theda is the 15th young person to exchange with counterpart young people from the Tryon area under the sponsorship of the two matching Rotary Clubs. Her father, Arno, was instrumental in establishing the Program on the German end in 1975 and served as Chairman of the Exchange Committee for 12 years. Theda is attending school in Saarbrucken, Germany and will graduate next year. Their school has 13 grades and is equivalent to a junior college. From there she will go to the University and major in biology. She is one of four daughters, next to the youngest; her activities include swimming, skiing, “going out,” music, shopping, and particularly while Continued On Back Pape Sales And Use Tax Polk County collected $91,927 from the local 2 percent sales and use tax in June. Special Meeting The Tryon Board of Commissioners will meet on Monday, July 30,1990 at 7 p.m., at the Town Hall, to hold an executive session concerning personnel. One married couple in six included a stepchild or adopted child in 1980. By 1985, that number had increased to one in five. During the 1980s the number of unmarried women leading households with children grew almost twice as fast as all families.
