Weather Tuesday, high 91, low

in July was above average at 7
inches. The average is 5.14

For the year so far, the
Thermal Belt has received 6.1
inches more rain than the
average to date. So far in 1990,
46.04 inches of rain has fallen.
The truck driver who was hit by
a train two weeks ago at a
Landrum railroad crossing
awoke from a coma Monday, but
was still unable to speak. Danny
Messer, 29, of Waynesville, N. C.
has been in Spartanburg
Regional Medical Center since
the accident occured July 18.
The railroad crossing at S.C.
Highway 14 was cited in a state
report last year as one of the
most hazardous in the state.
The Spartanburg Herald-
Journal reported yesterday that
the FBI has cleared the Landrum
Police Department of illegal
wiretapping charges.
An FBI spokesman said, “It
seems that the recording device
on the telephone was one that is
used similarly by other police
departments to monitor
emergency calls.

Substitute Teacher
Orientation
There will be a two-hour
orientation for new substitute
teachers in the Polk County
School System on Friday, August
10, at 9 a.m. in the Board Room at
Stearns Education Center. 202 E.
Mills Street. Columbus.
All who wish to substitute must
attend. Persons having
completed a previous
orientation are not required to
attend this meeting.
The two-hour Substitute
Orientation is required before a
name can be placed on the
approved list of substitutes.
Bring to the meeting a social
security card and driver’s
license or a passport, necessary
for the completion of Form 1-9
which proves citizenship. If a
teaching certification is held,
please bring a copy of it to this
meeting. Also please provide
documentation if Effective
Teacher Training (ETT) has
been completed. If there are
questions, call Ms. Susan

July 31st was a tie, net 30, Morley
Kahoe, Jane Clarke and Evelyn

Foundation Awards
Mimi Cecil on July 25 was
named chairman for the coming
year of the Community
Foundation of Western North
Carolina.
The foundation supports Steps
to Hope in Columbus with a $2,000
grant to help pay the salary of a
night shelter manager.
The outgoing chairman. Dr.
Charles T. McCullough Jr.
praised the community
foundation movement as the
“largest growing form of
philanthropy in the United States
today. There are now over 320
community foundations in the
country and more are being
organized every year."
The Western North Carolina
foundation distributed over
$600 000 last vear
Graduated
Miss Lori Ann Tipton, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Earl D. Tipton of
Tryon was recently graduated
from Appalachian State
University in Boone, North
Carolina. She was conferred with
a Master of Arts Degree in
Clinical Psychology.
Requirements of this degree, in
addition to the class work,
included a comprehensive exam,
a six month internship and a
written thesis with an oral
defense. Miss Tipton’s thesis was
entitled “Depression and
Longevity in Geriatric Patients
Residing in Two Types of Nursing
Facilities.” She is currently
employed as a Psychologist
Specialist with the Mentally
Retarded Defendant Program,
Florida State Hospital.

Results of the North-South
Bridge on July 30 were: tied for
1st and 2nd Ed Delehanty with
Lou Hodell and Roy
Schwerdtman with Porter
Morgan. 3rd Stan Fiol with
Freeman Brooks. Next game
will be at the home of Roy
Schwerdtman on August 13.
