The Polk County Board of Commissioners meets Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in the board meeting room of the courthouse annex. Meeting at exactly the same time will be the Board of Education, across the street in the Stearns building. What does a citizen do if he wants to attend both these key meetings each month? Polk County high school athletes of every description are busy warming up for the fall sports season these days. Students interested in playing any sport should contact their school. Coaches are seeking players. The Wolverines had an outstanding year last year. Let’s hope this year that they continue to learn, grow, enjoy the competition, and win. if that’s in the cards. The Lanier Library will honor Barbara Stroup (Mrs. Dudley), author of the Library’s recently published Centennial Book, at a reception on Saturday, August 18, from 2:30 to4 p.m. at the Library. John Steinke, designer of the Centennial Logo, illustrated the book with his own original drawings and designs and will also be honored at this very special party, the final event of Mary Lenox’ Centennial program, celebrating the Library's 100th birthday in April 1990. Barbara Stroup is an accomplished writer who put aside her own personal writing endeavors to organize 25 years of material for the Centennial Book. For two years, she perused old minutes. Bookmarks, news releases, letter, and documents, weaving together the story of The Lanier Library from 1965 to 1990. Mrs. Stroup has been writing most of her life (she wrote her first story at nine!). Although she has been writing stories and publishing newspaper and magazine articles, she did not begin writing seriously until fifteen years ago when she began to specialize in children’s books. Her work has been recognized by her professional colleagues. Twice she was awarded first prize for juvenile fiction by the TarHeel Writers Roundtable. She was also the recipient of two first prizes in a juvenile fiction contest Continued On Back Page FRIDAY, AUGUST 3,1990 Autumn Care Residents Cruise A group of residents from Autumn Care Nursing Center in Saluda were treated to a fun filled summer outing on Lake Lure July 23. Seventeen residents, accompanied by nine staff members, enjoyed a picnic of fried chicken with all the fixings. Following the picnic, eighteen members of the group boarded “The Showboat" for a relaxing cruise around the lake. “The Showboat” is captained by Russell Webb of Lake Lure, whose mother is an Autumn Care resident. Correction Charles Halford, the Lynn man whose family was burned out this week, wears a size 2-extra large shirt. Anyone who would like to donate anything to this family may leave items at the Columbus Fire Department. ?»C Per ( op\ A Hole-In-One Geoffrey Tennant, athletic director of Polk County Schools, showed his students a thing or one this week — a hole-in-one Tennant shot the hole-in-one at Grandfather Mountain Country Club with a three-iron The hole was 181 yards. It was reportedly the first hole-in-one he's ever gotten. Not bad, coach. Cross Country Practice Begins Women’s Cross Country practice will begin Monday. Aug 6. at 6 p.m. Practice will be held at Harmon Field. Students attending Polk Central should be at Polk Central High School by 5:15 to be transported by the shuttle bus to Harmon Field.
