TFAC’S Treat For You
The weather Wednesday: high
80, low 64, hum. 74 percent.
It happened again. Another
Wednesday passed and we forgot
to set out our recylcables for
curbside pick-up in Tryon. Each
Wednesday, the town will pick up
glass, newspaper and aluminum
sorted for recycling — but you
have to remember to set it out!
Next Wednesday on Aug. 15,
the town crews will be picking up
recyclables in the portion of town
defined by Braewick, Carolina,
Jervey, South Trade and Pacolet
Streets.
The Asheville Citizen reported
Thursday that interim county
manager Glenn Rhodes now
believes the county and Alltel will
settle their differences amicably.
Alltel representative Jerry
Covil on Monday night had
informed the board that his
company was unwilling to place a
surcharge on its phone bills to
help the county pay for its new E-
911 equipment.
But on Wednesday, Rhodes
told a reporter that later
conversations with Alltel

OCCASION? The finale of the
Fine Arts Center’s Summer
Social Performers. The Shady
Grove Band from Chapel Hill,
NC, presenting a versatile
bluegrass show with their own
blend of old and new, traditional
and acoustic bluegrass music
delivered with wit and
spontaneity.
Jerry Brown, founder of the
band nine years ago, plays guitar
and clawhammer banjo with
Daniel Casey plays guitar.
Charles Petee, who writes most
the original music, belts out on
mandolin and guitar and the only
member of the group who is not a
native North Carolinian, Lynn
Davis, plays acoustic bass. All
four of these instrumentalists
sing lead and harmony, giving
the group the versatility to go
from a banjo "breakdown” to a
beautiful capella vocal piece.
The Shady Grove Band has
appeared at many of the largest
mustic festivals in the US,
Canada and Europe. They have
toured Europe on six months-long
concert tours and still
maintained a busy college
touring schedule throughout this
country. Four times selected for
the NC Arts Council Touring
program, the band was recently
selected for the Southern Arts
Federation roster through 1991.
The band is an ideal group for
such an event as the Summer
Social, delivering a high energy
show with a concentration on
humor and a good time for the
audience. Their reviews of
performances, whether in this
country, Canada or Europe,
invariably end with fans noisily
