There will be a ribbon cutting for the new Skyuka ACE Hardware store in Lynn Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. A reception will be held Saturday from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at The Lanier Library to honor Barbara Stroup, author, and John Steinke, illustrator, of the library’s 100th Anniversary Book. School starts at 8 a m., this year, six minutes earlier than last year. The doors open at 7:30a.m. On the first day, students should first check the homeroom roster posted in the cafeteria and then report to their homeroom. Principal Johnnie Summers will call students from each grade out of class in turn during the first period for information and orientation sessions. An estimated 150-155 students will be attending Tryon High this fall, said Sandy Paff. Any new students who are not already registered are encouraged to register today, but may register Monday as well. School buses will run on the same routes as last year. If you are unsure where to meet your bus, call the school at 859-6636. Two new teachers are now on the Tryon High school faculty: Loretta Hembree, special education; and Carmen Byrd, math. High School Groundbreaking The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Polk Consolidated High school will take place Monday, Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the new high school site on Hwy 108 just east of Columbus. Everyone is invited FRIDAY, AUGUST 17,1990 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Barham Foster Thomson, Jr. celebrated their fifieth wedding anniversary August 1st. They were honored on August 12th with a reception at FENCE, hosted by their children, Foster Thomson of Burke, Virginia, Susan Slu of Davidson, N.C., and Linda Williams of Landrum. Also present were their seven grandchildren and many relatives and friends, some from California and other distant places. Mrs. Cleo Bradey, Mrs. Madeline Thomson, Mrs. Estelle Broome and Mrs. Grace Broome assisted with the reception. Mrs. Thompson is the former Delphene Broome of Landrum. I am speaking here about Retirees. By definition, a Retiree (Mr Editor, please always make that upper case), is someone who has quit his lifetime of work — whatever that might have been — and is not looking for a new job. Further, a Retiree is someone who is starting life all over again In many cases, this is in an entirely new community without family, friends or connections. It is important for you to fully appreciate that a Retiree has achieved a unique and exalted status. He is the ultimate survivor who has triumphed against insurmountable odds Be truthful now, back in the old days (that’s pre-retirement) did you really ever think you would make it through to retirement? The best thing about being a Retiree is that you no longer have to do anything you don’t want to do. There are no demands other than those you put on yourself. But at the same time, retirement is not all peaches and cream.
