TUESDAY, AUGUST 28,1990 Rutherford Man Dies In Crash The body of a Rutherford County man was found in a pond off Hwy. 108 in Pea Ridge Saturday morning, hours after police responded to a reported accident at the scene. David Wayne Helton, 24, was found Saturday morning by rescue workers who dragged the pond. He reportedly had moved to Rutherford a year ago from Indiana and was working for a beer distributor in Shelby. Polk County Sheriff Boyce Carswell said police and rescue workers were called to Pea Ridge around 2 a.m. Saturday morning when it was reported that a truck had left the road and had run into a pond in front of Charles Crisp’s home. Carswell said the highway patrol, sheriff’s deputies, and rescue personnel at first could not find the truck, which had submerged in the pond. Only the antenna was showing above the surface of the water. When they retrieved the Toyota pick-up, Carswell said they found no body inside and the passenger window rolled down. Carswell said police believed at the time that the driver had escaped and left the area. Police began a search for the driver using the license plate numbers to find his address in Rutherford County. It was discovered that Helton had moved, and police then began searching for any friends or Continued On Back Page 2HC Per Coin Wolverines Win “Tough One” The Polk County Wolverines won a tough one Friday night — A 14-13 victory over the Chesnee Eagles. "It is nice to win a ball game when you have to work that hard,” said Wolverine coach Dennis Stokes. “If you work that hard and lose, it kind of takes the wind out of your sails.” Stokes said some bad calls by referees made things tougher than they needed to be, starting with a call ruling that a pass from Kelly Ruff to Travis Gilbert was caught by Gilbert and then fumbled. "Travis never had his hands on the ball," Stokes said But there were some highlights as well. Neal Petty ran back the opening kick-off 80 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked. Shane Foy blocked a Chesnee 23-yard field goal attempt with 22 seconds remaining to salvage the victory. After Petty’s kick-off return, the Eagles took over for awhile, scoring twice and missing a PAT wide right, Polk County’s next drive advanced 55 yards in ten plays. Sean Cunningham capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Cunningham then went around the left end for the two point conversion to give the Wolverines a 14-13 lead. "All the members of the team played well — considering,” Coach Stokes said.
