Foothills Humane Society is
midway along in the construction
of its new shelter facility on Little
Mountain Road. The building will
accomodate 18 runs for dogs and
a special room for puppies and
cats.
The Polk County Republican
Club’s annual picnic feat is this
Saturday at 6 p.m. at Harmon
Field, rain or shine.
The Ninth Annual Hogback
Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair
will be held Saturday, Sept. 1,
from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at
Landrum High School.

will defend their championship

Attorney General At
‘Elephant Roast’
Judge and Mrs. Lacy
Thornburg will be the special
guests at the First Elephant
Roast Fundraiser for the Polk
County Democratic Party,
Saturday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m., at
Polk Central High School
cafeteria.
Judge Thornburg, the Attorney
General for the state of North
Carolina, will be the featured
speaker. All local candidates also
have been invited.
Unitarians Meet
The Thermal Belt Unitarian
Fellowship will meet for services
on Sunday, September 2nd at
10:30 a.m. at the Tryon Youth
Center. The next services will be
on September 16th with poet Emil
Dillard.
County Sports
High school athletic contests
scheduled in the next few days
are:
Polk County varsity and junior
varsity volleyball teams meet R-
. S Central at home tonight at 5
p.m.
The Polk County junior varsity
football team meets Landrum at
Landrum Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7
p.m.
The Polk County women’s
varsity tennis team will compete
at Crest High School Thursday,
Aug. 30at 4:30 p.m.
Pony Show
The South Eastern Welsh Pony
and Cob Association will hold
their Fall Show at FENCE Sept.
8th.
The show promises to attract
some of the best ponies in the
United States to compete in the
breeding classes. Some of the
farms taking part are, The
Glannant farm, Ithaca, N.Y. and
Flex Glen farm, Blomington,
Indiana. Many open (open to both
horses and pomes of all breeds)
performance classes will be held
in the afternoon. They will
include: trail class, short stirrup,
hunter, long stirrup, schooling
hunter, novice and pleasure
driving. A Stallion Parade and
Stallion Auction will be Friday
night, Sept. 7th at 7 p.m. For

“High Spirits”
Director
Debbie Goode
Debbie Goode, shown in the
above photo taken during a
rehearsal, is garbed
appropriately for her duties as
director of “High Spirits,” the
musical that Tryon Little Theater
will present at Tryon Fine Arts
Center October 4-7. The printed
shirt asks, “Are We Having Fun
Yet?” From the expression on
her face, the answer is obvious.
When queried about the
upcoming show, Debbie says,
“This is no musical comedy; it’s
a musical FARCE. The
difference is that the laughter is
wilder.” She adds, “This jauntily
brilliant muscial farce just spills
over with debonair
laughter. Even the songs, all
sixteen of them, are filled with
