The weather Thursday was
rainy — very rainy. Bob
Richardson of Blue Ridge
Weavers in Tryon measured five
inches of rain in his gauge in
Morgan Chapel Village outside
Columbus.
Our regular weather reporter,
Robert Dedmondt, measured 4.93
inches of rain at his guage on
South Trade Street in Tryon.
Two local architects were also
measuring during the night. Mike
Derrick of Columbus and Kelly
Murphy of Hunting Country,
Tryon were up around 2 a.m.
counting the seconds between the
time they saw lightning until
they heard the thunder.
Using the speed of sound to
figure, one second equals one
mile, Derrick figured the lightn
ing was eight miles away.
Murphy calculated four miles
distance. The next morning they
compared notes and decided it
had passed in between their two
homes.
Richardson said wherever the

The high Thursday was 88, the
low 71, and the humidity 75

St. Luke’s Hospital
Receives $1 Million
St. Luke’s Hospital has
received a $1 million donation
from a trust fund established
under the Last Will and
Testament of Walter Scott Green.
Green, one of the founding
hospital board members,
participated in the 1928 signing of
the original hospital charter. He
died in the mid ’50s, leaving
several beneficiaries.
At the time of his death,
Greene’s estate was valued at
about $155,000, and his will
named St. Luke’s Hospital as the
final beneficiary. The hospital
has accepted the corpus of the
trust, which after years of
investment by trust officers, now
totals $1 million.
“The donation, our largest to
date, will be placed in the
hospital’s endowment account,”
stated Joseph Claud, chairman of
the hospital board, “bringing our
total endowment fund to over $3
million.”
“The trustees feel it is very
important for the endowment to
continue to grow,” continued
Claud, “particularly in light of
the heavy Medicare percentage
at St. Luke’s. Trustees are now
considering plans to increase the
endowment fund. Continued
growth will ensure our success in
meeting the healthcare needs of
the community during an era of
dramatic improvements in
technology, changes in the
delivery of care, and the
restrictive government payment
