Tryon resident Jim Lowry, a
member of the N. C. Commission
of Indian Affairs, vigorously
opposed Gov. Jim Martin over a
recent appointment.
Martin appointed Patricia
Clark of Charlotte as the
commission chairman, but
Lowry and other members of the
commission were unhappy that
the governor had not consulted
them.
Lowry called the governor’s
move “forceful and disgraceful.”
“We have always placed a high
value on Indian self-
determination in this state,”
Lowry said. “And, we have
fought to preserve that right.”
Lowry’s motion to vote on the
appointment by secret ballot
passed, but he said later he
believed it was the commisision’s
five white members who cast the
deciding votes. He said they
rarely attend meetings, and only
came out to support the governor.

Man Falls 85 Feet
Over Pearson’s Falls
A 22-year-old Chesnee man,
Donald Price, was hiking with a
friend near Saluda when he
decided to climb over a gate
along the road and fell 85 feet
over Pearson’s Falls.
He apparently landed on a
rock, Polk County EMS director
Lesa Wilson said Monday. Both
legs had compound fractures
below the knees and he appeared
to be bleeding internally as well
since his blood pressure was low
and dropping.
Wilson said Polk County EMS
stabilized Price and carried
him by ambulance to White Oak
Condominiums where the
Mission Air Medical Ambulance
from Asheville was waiting.
Price was then flown to
Memorial Mission Hospital
where he could get the attention
of a neuro-surgeon.
Wilson said she would be
surprised if, after his fall, Price
did not also have some spinal
injuries. A spokesperson at
Memorial Mission could not give
any condition report on Price
Monday.
