Wayne Pace, a veteran apple
grower with orchards in
Henderson County and Green
Creek in Polk County is featured
on the cover of the September
edition of North Carolina Farm
Bureau News.
A story inside describes
Pace’s efforts to grow different
varieties of apples. He believes
the market for the Red Delicious
is over-supplied.
He is now experimenting with
Japanese Fuji apple trees, which
bear in October, and New
Zealand Braeburns. The Fuji is a
good eating, crisp apple with a
distinctive flavor and long shelf
life, he said.

Injuries Minor
In Two Accidents
Several people received minor
injuries after two automobile
accidents in Tryon in the last
week.
On Wednesday, Sept. 19, Sonya
Russell and a passenger, a child,
received minor injuries in an
accident at the intersection of
Howard and Trade Streets.
Russell was driving a 1990 Ford
north on Trade and was passing
under a green light at its
intersection with Howard Street
when her car was struck by a 1985
Chevrolet traveling east on
Howard Street.
The driver of the Chevrolet,
Amy Carlton, was charged with a
red light violation. Tryon police
officer Mike Lawing was the
investigator.
On Friday, Sept. 14 at 3:40
p.m., Mr. and Mrs. Jules Larson
were injured when their 1983
Ford Station Wagon was struck
from behind while waiting for a
car to make a left turn off the
southbound lane of South Trade
Street into a private driveway
near Jervey Road.
The Larsons’ car was struck by
a 1973 Capris driven by Brian
Morse, 17. Morse was charged
with following too closely.
The accident pushed the
Larson’s vehicle into the vehicle
in front of it, a 1990 Ford Bronco,
owned by Jeremy Wainwright
and driven by Arthur Chapman.
Both Chapman and Larson
were waiting for the other driver
to turn.
Candidates Present
Views In ACT Forum
It was a gentlemanly,
reserved, even quiet evening
when the six candidates for three
seats on the Polk County Board of
Commissioners presented their
views in a forum sponsored by
the Association of County
Taxpayers (ACT) Wednesday
night.
About 55 persons filled the
lecture room at Isothermal
Community College’s Columbus
campus. Each candidate in turn
introduced himself, answered
the same questions posed by
ACT, and then fielded questions
from the audience.
The three Republican
candidates are: Bill Crowell,
owner of the Tryon Theater and
co-owner of Skyuka ACE
Hardware in Lynn; Tim
McCormack, a manager with
McBride Servicemaster in
Spartanburg; and Ken Faulkner,
an incumbent commissioner and
a retired New York State
Parkway Police sergeant.
The three Democratic
candidates are: Sue Cochran, an
active Democrat for 20 years and
an officer with NCNB in
Columbus; Carson Deck, owner
of Meadow Brook Golf Course in
Green Creek and a retired
manager with Biltmore Dairy
Farms; and Rachel Ramsey, an
incumbent commissioner and
director of Steps to HOPE.
There were virtually no heated
exchanges, and the only
challenger even to slightly wag a
