The Any and All Dog Show is
planned for Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2
p.m. at Harmon Field. All the
usual classes of competition will
be included, but this year the
judges also will be looking for a
dog with movie star qualities!
The Carolina Carriage Club’s
fourth annual Combined Driving
Event is planned for Saturday
and Sunday at FENCE.
Combined driving puts horse,
carriage and driver through
obstacle courses and is one of the
fastest growing equestrian
sports.
Spectators will be welcome at
no charge. But if you would like to
be a patron and be given
preferential seating, call Doug
Smith at 859-5739.
Western-style square dancing
classes begin tomorrow night at 8
p.m. at the Log Cabin at Harmon
Field. For more information, call

Resource Council
To Meet
The Polk County Community
Resource Council will meet on
Tuesday, September 26, at the
Emergency Medical Service
Headquarters in Columbus.
The meeting will start at 7 p.m.
EMS Headquarters is located
in the basement of the Polk
County Jail. Hosting the meetihg
will be EMS Director Lisa
Wilson.
Organizations county-wide are
invited to send representatives to
Council meetings. The Resource
Council meets every two months
to identify and discuss
community needs and locate
resources.

Ornithologist
Visits Amazon
Simon Thompson recently
spent eight days on a study trip
visiting the upper Amazon River
region in Peru.
Thompson travelled to an area
near Iquitos, Peru, to familiarize
himself with the Amazon region
before leading a trip for the
Foothills Equestrian Nature
Centre in Tryon. The FENCE trip
is scheduled for November 10-23.

Purchase Lot
Larry and Vicky Siler of
Naples, Italy have bought lot
number 12 at Ridgeview Acres
from Mr. and Mrs. William Taff
of Palatine, Illinois. The Taffs
had planned to retire here, but
have had to change their plans
because of health reasons.
Vicky Siler is a teacher at the
American military base in
Naples. Larry is a retired Air
Force intelligence officer. When
Vicky retires in another two or
three years, they plan to build a
house on their land. The Silers
are outdoor enthusiasts and are
looking forward to hiking on the
bridle trails in the area.

Tryon Lions
Tyron Lions Club will meet at 7
p.m. Tuesday at the Western
Steer Steakhouse in Columbus.
Ellis Fincher will be in charge of
the program.
Mrs. Swedenborg of Tryon has
as her guests her granddaughter,
Pamela Etters and girlfriend,
Wendy Gillen, both of Salt Lake
City, Utah.

Christian Women’s
Country Fair Set
The Tryon area Christian
Women’s Club will hold their
third annual Country Fair on
October 10, 11-1:30, at the
Vineyard in Tryon. There will be
a silent auction of handmade
crafts, baked goods and
Christmas items.
Anita Kelly-Couch, dynamic
speaker and gifted solist from
Charleston, S.C. will be on the
program.

1991 Merit Program
The principal, Johnnie W.
Summers, Jr. of Tryon High
School, announced recently that
John Brent Edwards, has been
named a Commended Student in
the National Merit Scholarship
Program. A Letter of
Commendation from the school
and National Merit Scholarship
Corporation, which conducts the
program, will be presented to this
