The weekend weather: Friday,
high 78. low 64, hum. 74 percent,

Elizabeth Brock, a 12-year-old
from Columbus, had quite an
honor recently when Sen. Jesse
Helms read her letter to him
before a national audience.
Helms quoted Elizabeth while
speaking to thousands to textile
workers who rallied across from
the White House in Washington,
D.C. Sept. 12. They were urging
Congress to support a bill which
would place restrictions on
textile imports.
Elizabeth’s letter read as
follows:
“Dear Sir:
My name is Elizabeth Brock. I
am 12 years old.
I'm writing to thank you for
your support on textile industry.
But I need to ask your help again

Open House Tonight
Tryon Elementary parents,
come meet your child’s teachers,
visit his classroom and see his
work at the Open House set for
tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Your child is proud of his school
and his work, so come show

sign up for the yearly PTA
membership drive on the map
area, also between 6:30 and 7:30
p.m.
After meeting your child’s
teachers and joining PTA for the
1990-91 school year, come to the
auditorium for the first general
PTA meeting of the year and
hear the ideas of new principal
Dr. Ed Lakey. Children are invit
ed into the auditorium for this
short meeting, but child care and
student entertainment will be
provided for later PTA programs

volleyball team meets Chesnee at
home at 5 p.m.
The Polk County women’s
varsity tennis team competes at
Hendersonville at 4 p.m.
Lorrie Blackwell
Miss Columbus 1990
Lorrie is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. (Judy) Charles
Blackwell of Columbus. She is a
graduate of Polk Central High
School where she was active in
cheerleading, volleyball, Interact
Club and various community
activities.
Following graduation, Lorrie
attended Kings College in
Charlotte, earning a diploma in
Secretarial Science. At Kings
College, she was on The Dean’s
List and a member of Phi Beta
Lambda (a national business

Hospital Trustees Set
$5 Million Goal
St. Luke’s Hospital’s trustees
have established goals and
objectives for next fiscal year,
which begins Oct. 1. The primary
goal set by the board is to raise S2
million over the next three years
for the endowment fund, raising
the total endowment to $5 million.
Interest and dividend income
from the endowment fund is used
to support hospital operations,
maintain the physical plant, and
purchase capital equipment. The
trustees have begun initial
planning for a formal
development and fundraising
program to raise the additional $2
million needed.
Additional goals set by the
board include: 1) continuing
renovation programs for specific
areas, including the lobby and
gift shop; 2) ongoing
development of programs
expressly for the older
population, including Case
Management and
Health/Wellness programs; and
3) the development of special
programs directed toward the
business community and
employers inthe area.
