Educators Plan
SAT Improvements
Yes, North Carolina’s students’
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
scores are the bottom of the
barrel. N.C. students scored an
average of 401 on the verbal
section of the SAT and 440 on the
math section, for a total SAT
average of 841.
Yes, Polk County’s students’
SAT scores are below the state
average. The average verbal
score was 395 and the average
math score was 426 for a total
average of 821.
But there is hope:
Polk County educators are
attacking the low SAT scores of
the past with a vengeance, as the
Polk County Board of Education
learned when Supt. Dr. James
Causby presented the SAT
Improvement Plan for the 1990-91
school year at the September
board meeting.
In addition, prior to
implementation of the SAT
Improvement plan, the 1990 SAT
results improved 30 points from
the 1989 test scores, and student
participation increased from 44
percent in 1989 to 49 percent in
1990.
However, participation figures
only reflect seniors taking the
SAT, whether for the first or
subsequent times, explained
Susan Leonard, assistant
superintendent for instruction.
The SAT Improvement Plan
begins with increased
expectation of students, parents
and school personnel at all-level?.
