The weather Tuesday: high 84,
low 59, hum. 78 percent. There
was a trace of rain by 7 a.m.
Wednesday morning. After such
a dry September, many were
rooting for more than a trace.
Tryon High Schoo! is holding its
open house for parents tonight at
7:30 p.m.
The Polk County Planning
Commission meets tonight at 7:30
p.m. at the county courthouse in
Columbus. This is the board that
is studying sign ordinances and
other matters pertaining to
planning and zoning. If you want
to follow these issues, follow this
board. Don’t wait until matters
reach the Board of
Commissioners.
The Polk County Public
Library Book Sale will be held
this Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon
in the library garage.
The merchants of Columbus
will hold a Sidewalk Sale and Arts
& Crafts Show Saturday from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. in honor of
Columbus Day.
There are many volunteers
working to build up a new
tradition for the Tryon area —
that is the Tryon Hounds Fall
Steeplechase. Few of us realize
what an effort this project

Southern Art Program
The American Assn, of
University Women has finalized
plans for the appearance of
Robert M Hicklin, Jr. at
Isothermal Community College
on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m.
Mr. Hicklin, a Spartanburg art
dealer, specializes in art relating
to the south. He has counselled
over 50 museums and institutions
and 20 corporate collections as
well as aided numerous
individuals with development of
their collections.
For his program at Isothermal
Community College he will bring
some of the paintings from his
collections as well as his most
recently published book, “Look
Away: Reality and Sentiment in
Southern Art.”
This program will benefit the
ASUW Educational Foundation
Program for graduate studies,
and as such, your donations of
$7.50 will be tax deductible.
Refreshments will be served
following the program. Tickets
may be obtained from Virginia
Clark 859-5766, and AAUW
member, or at the door. —

Horne Arrived
Air Force Staff Sgt. Kenneth R.
Horne, a satellite communication
systems equipment technician,
has arrived for duty at RAF
Chicksands, England.
Horne is the son of Joyce A.
Mason of Inman, S. C. and
Burdette C. Horne of
Campobello, S. C. He is a 1979
graduate of Landrum High
School.
Pruitt - Powell
Mr. and Mrs. James Pruitt of
Landrum announce the
engagement of their daughter,
Laurie to Scotty Powell, son of
Jim Powell Jr. of Duncan and
Martha Bridges of Startex.
The couple will be married
Oct. 19th at Grace Baptist
Church in Landrum.
Miss Pruitt is a graduate of
Grace Christian School and
attending Spartanburg Technical
College. She is employed ny
South Carolina Elastic Co. She is
the granddaughter of Mrs. Earl
Pruitt and the late Mr. Pruitt of
Landrum and the late Mrs. Jesse
Hinson of Tryon and the late
Luther Floyd of New Orleans.
Mr. Powell was a graduate of
Byrnes High School and is
employed with Lanier Express in
Greer. He is the grandson of Mrs.
Jim Powell Sr. and the late Mr.
Powell and Mrs. Paul Guy and
the late Mr. Guy from Startex.
Tootsie Roll
Campaign Underway
The Knights of Columbus,
Tryon Council No. 9492 will
conduct its fourth annual Tootsie
Roll campaign to hel area
mentally handicapped citizens
this week and weekend.
The project is called Operation
LAMB, Least Among My
Brothers.
The Knights will be at Bi-Lo in
Landrum today through
Saturday, at Revco in Columbus
today through Saturday, and at
Food Lion in Columbus on
Saturday.
The Tootsie Rolls are given
away and donations are
appreciated. All money given,
less the cost of the Tootsie Rolls,
is given to organizations that
support and work with area
mentally handicapped citizens.
During the past three years,
the following organizations have
received funds from the Knights
of Columbus generated by
Operation LAMB: the Polk
County Sheltered Workshop, the
Charles Lea Center (a residential
program in Landrum), and Polk
County’s preschool handicapped
program.
The Knights of Columbus look
forward to meeting you in
Columbus and Landrum this
week.

Tryon Antiques Club is meeting
at 10 a.m. Oct 16 at Food Lion
parking lot in Columbus, not at 11
a.m. as previously reported.
