A total of 5.06 inches of rain fell from Thursday morning, when Tryon weather recorder Robert Dedmondt left for Nashville, through Sunday when he returned. He didn’t have humidity readings for the days he was away. Dedmondt said the weather was great in Nashville. He saw a lot of the Nashville Grand Ole Opry stars. But he didn’t sleep very well. Apparently some disgruntled employees in the 13- story hotel where he was staying set off the fire alarm at 3 a.m. one morning. Mrs. Frieda Massey had a different sort of guage to measure the rain that fell near her home in Holbert Cove off Silver Creek Road. The creek rose out of its banks and created a lake around her house. That’s the first time that’s happened since she moved here in 1957, Mrs. Massey said. C. 28782 Two Arrested, Charged With Murder The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday evening, just after dark, arrested two young men suspected of murder and arson in the death of Paul Frederick Acker of Pea Ridge. The suspects arrested were James Edward Janes, 21, of Cox Trailer Park in Union Mills, and Stanley Shane Smith, 20, of Oak Springs Road, Rutherford County. Both are being held in the Polk County jail without bond on charges of murder and first degree arson. One has confessed to his participation in the crimes, Polk County Sheriff Boyce Carswell said Monday. Paul Acker's badly burned body was found last Thursday morning inside his burning mobile home by a neighbor who was working for Acker. An autopsy the next day revealed that the cause of death was two bullet wounds. Acker, 51, moved from Long Island, N.Y. and bought 300 acres in Pea Ridge a year ago. He was working to develop the property into a cattle farm. According to Carswell, Rutherford County Sheriff Ed Searcy’s office on Saturday afternoon received a call from a person who had found items matching those taken from Paul Acker in the woods in the Gilkey section of Rutherford County. Rutherford deputies visited the site and identified the items as Continued On Back Page TUESDAY, OCT. 16,1990 Wolverines Looking For League Title The Polk County Wolverines were looking past Edneyville Saturday night, and only put forth the effort needed to win, coach Dennis Stokes said Monday. Win they did, 23-7, bringing the Wolverine record 6-1, 2-0 in the conference. And just as the players expected, that sets up a showdown this Friday night with Hendersonville for the league crown. Hendersonville, also 6-1, has won the conference the last three years. “We’re going to take that honor away from them,” Stokes said. “I just don’t know which year it will be. It could be this year as well as any.” Stokes said beating Hendersonville will require an extra effort. Hendersonville has four running backs “that can fly,” he said, including one who won the state 100-meter and 220- meter titles at the state track meet last year. The Cherokee High School star running back who gave Polk fits in their one loss this year finished second at that track meet. "We’re just going to have to play our defense and don’t allow them to get outside," Stokes said. The Hendersonville offensive line may be a bit stronger, Stokes said. "Their strength program is way ahead of ours,” he said. “Our weight program is coming Contionucd On Back Page 20e Per Copy New Arrival Sandy and Rhonda Mills of Pea Ridge, announce the birth of a daughter, Chelsey Lynette, born Thursday, October 11 at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville.
