candidates for the Board of
Education tonight at 7:30 at
Isothermal Community College.

Joseph Walker, a bishop in the
Church of Jesus Christ of the
Latter Day Saints, recently on
fatherhood. He talks about a
weekend of activities, which he
pursued to the neglect of his
children.

Inducts 13 Members
The Tryon High School Beta
Club inducted 13 new members
on Oct. 2.
The new members were Neil
Hall, Charlie Hearon, Vida
Holcomb, Bobby Gregory,
Angela Johnston, Jennifer
McConnell, and Jennifer Owens.
Also, Virginia Ruby, Mark
Schulman, Anita Steen, Kisha
Suber, Shawn Suber and Ginny

Women’s Week
The 62nd Anniversary of
National Business Women’s
Week is being celebrated this
week.
The objectives of the week are
1) to promote full participation
equity, and economic self-
sufficiency for all working
women; 2) to publicize the
achievements, objectives and
programs of Business and
Professional Women.
The Thermal Belt Business and
Professional Women’s Club is a
non-profit, non-partisan, non
sectarian, self-governing and
member supported organization.
It is an organization for research
and expansion of educational
opportunities for working
women.
The club welcomes new

Appointed To Bank
Board of Directors
Mr. Ray J. Foster, president of
Tryon Federal Savings and Loan
Association, has announced the
appointment of Phillip D. Walker
to the Board of Directors.
A native of Polk County, Mr.
Walker attended Western
Carolina University, receiving a
Bachelor of Science degree in
Business Administration. A
veteran of the Korean War, since
his military services he has
applied himself in business as a
real estate broker for 25 years.
He is the owner of ERA-The
Walker Agency.
Mr. Walker is married to the
former Mary H. Haywood and
resides at Ridgewood Farm in
Mill Spring.
Mr. Walker’s community
activities include: membership
in Columbus Baptist Church, Red
Fox Country Club, the board of

Placed First
The Landrum High School
Distinctive Regiment Marching
Band participated in a
tournament at James F. Byrnes
High School in Duncan, S.C. on
Oct. 6 and placed second in their
their class.
On Oct. 13th they participated
in the Mauldin Band Contest in
Mauldin, S.C. and placed first in
their class.
On Oct. 20 the band will
perform in the S.C. Upperstate at
Boiling Springs High School in
Boiling Springs, S.C. and on Oct.
27 they will go to Irmo, S.C. to
participate in the State
Competition.
Red Fox W.G.A.
The tournament of the day Oct.
11 for the Red Fox Women was
“Tee to Green” Low Net in
classes.
Winners in Class A were Dee
Griffith, 1st; Es Foote and
Marjorie Reeves, tied for znd;
Class B, Louise Cairns, 1st; Willa
Reed, 2nd; Class C, Ruth Lennox,
1st; Dot Cleveland, 2nd; Class D,
Delores Thomas, 1st; Sheila
Umlauf, 2nd.
Delores Thomas chipped in on
the 14th hole to share the prize
with Dot Cleveland who chipped
in on the 6th.
Oct. 18th will be “All Iron Play
Day" for the 18-holers, low net in
