The Foothills Humane Society Animal Shelter on Little Mountain Road next to the Tryon Hounds Kennel will be dedicated Nov. 11 during a 3 p.m. ceremony. Tea will be served from 2 to 4 p.m. Kathy Woody, executive secretary of the Tryon Thermal Belt Chamber of Commerce, wants to alert members that the date for the animal shelter dedication printed in the chamber newsletter is incorrect. The Polk County Historical Association will hear John Vollmer of Tryon discuss the history of his family at its meeting Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Stearns Educational Center auditorium. The public is invited. The Polk County Board of Education meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Stearns board room. N. C. 28782 Ann Whitmire Profiled Ann Whitmire, candidate for the Polk County Hoard of Education, is running unopposed from Cooper's Gap Township. Her profile published below completes a series of profiles of every candidate for the school board and the Polk County Board of Commissioners in the Bulletin aver the past two weeks. Voters no to the polls tomorrow.. Unopposed Sunny View candidate for the PolkCounty Board of Education Ann P. Whitmire said she would like to be part of “making a difference in education" for Polk County. A retired teacher, Whitmire has already visited every school and the Stearns Education Center, and as a school board member, she plans to participate in every school’s functions and be a school volunteer. Polk County’s educational strength is the dedication of its teachers ana administrators to implement instructional programs in the classroom that enhance learning opportunities, Whitmire said. One of the school system’s weaknesses is low scores on standardized achievement tests, she said. Whitmire said these scores can be improved by beginning early in the elementary schools with skills to develop critical thinking. Mr. Simpson, the son of Mr and Mrs. Harold Simpson of Rock Hill, S.C., is a graduate of Northwestern High School in Rock Hill and earned his degree in communications from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Candidates At Rotary Candidates for the Polk County Board of Commissioners will take the podium one more time today at the Tryon Rotary Club luncheon at the Vineyard in Tryon. The meeting starts at 11:45 and the forum will begin at 12:45 with each candidate being given four minutes to address two questions. One question asks the candidates plans for assuring orderly growth in Polk County, and the other asks them to describe their vision for the county and specific plans to bring it about.
