Several weekend newspapers
carried reports on Polk County
Superintendent of Schools, Dr.
James S. Causby. Causby won
statewide recognition after being
named the N.C. Superintendent
of the Year.
The Charlotte Observer
featured Causby’s story on the
front page, including a color
picture of the superintendent
walking with 13-year-old Derrick
Stover.
The Asheville Citizen and the
Observer cited Causby’s
achievements as leading a school
merger, passing a $14 million
school bond issue in a community
heavily populated with retirees,
overseeing a 30-point gain in SAT
scores, and cutting the county
drop-out rate in half.

Polk Sign
Panel Reports
A committee charged with
updating Polk County’s sign
ordinance made its first report to
county commissioners Monday.
Leo Baird, co-chairman of the
12-member panel that the
planning and zoning board
appointed several weeks ago,
made the report.
It was the last meeting for a
majority of Polk County Board of
Commissioners, however, and
Baird said he will most likely
have to brief the board again
when the new members are
seated next month.
W. Kenneth Faulkner and
Rachel Ramsey, who were
defeated in the Nov. 6 election,
and Henry S. Huntsinger, who did
not seek another term, will all
step down at the next
commission meeting.
Tim McCormack, Sue Cochran
and Carson Deck will be seated
on the newly organized board.
“A new sign ordinance is
something Polk County really
needs,” said Jeannie R. Martin,
who chairs the board. “It’s a
time-consuming thing this
committee has undertaken, to try
to meet everyone’s needs.
“They are trying to be sure that
the needs businesses have for
signs are met and at the same
time protect the general
citizenry’s right to have the
aesthetic qualities of their area
protected.”

Protective Mother In
“Steel Magnolias”
Inky Cloud
Inky Cloud, in her 16th
performance with TLT, is cast as
M’Lynn Eatenton in “Steel
Magnolias," the coming
attraction at TFAC. Inky last
appeared in the highly acclaimed
“Call Me Madam,” playing the
title role.
The role of M’Lynn is a difficult
one, perhaps the most
challenging Inky has faced as a
dramatic actress. As portrayed
by playwright Robert Harling
(who says M’Lynn is a true-to-life
rendering of his own mother), she
is a no-nonsense, socially
prominent career woman with
three children, including a
lovable yet headstrong daughter
who is a diabetic, and a difficult
husband.
We first meet M’Lynn in the
