Harold Stott w_s featured in a
long article in the Sports section
of the Spartanburg Herald-
Journal Wednesday.
Stott has for 20 years been a
Winston Cup pit crew member,
the last 15 with Spartanburg’s
Bud Moore Engineering racing
team.
Herald-Journal staff writer
David Green talked with Stott
about his reaction to the death of
Bill Elliott’s pit crew member
last Sunday at the Atlanta
Journal 500. Rich, 32, changes
rear tires — the same job that
Stott does for driver Morgan
Shepherd. Rich was killed when
Ricky Rudd’s Chevrolet slid out
of control into Elliott’s pit area.
“It makes you think,” Stott
said. “It could’ve been me
instead of him."
Stott said he is thinking about
quitting, something his wife
Barbara encouraged during the
interview.
“I am a competitor." Stott
said. “I don’t like to give up.
That’s not to say I won’t."
Stott said he told Moore after
last week’s race that unless
NASCAR makes new race

is cast as Ouiser Boudreaux
(pronounced Weezer) in the
coming attraction at TFAC,
“Steel Magnolias."
When we first meet Ouiser, she
has stopped in at the beauty shop
on her way to the vet. She says, “I
have to take my poor dog to the
vet before he has a nervous
breakdown. The dog, I mean.”
According to Ouiser, the dog’s
hair has fallen out because of the
noisy disturbance her neighbor
had created shooting birds
nesting in trees in the yard.
She enjoys making the worst of
a situation. Describing herself,
she says, “I look like dog food.”
When one of her friends,
describing her own troubles, says
that she doesn’t think things can
get any worse, Ouiser tells her,
“Of course they can.” Also, she

Financial Condition
Fine, Auditors Say
Polk County closed out the 1989-
90 fiscal year June 30 with
$834,000 cash on hand, reported
Bob Beam, from the accounting
firm of Crisp, Hughes & Co., to
the Polk County Board of
Commissioners Monday.
The county had money in the
general fund, and $429,000 in its
savings account, or “fund
balance.” That fund balance
equaled a healthy 8 percent of the
county budget. Beam said.
Beam said the county’s
financial position was much
improved over its condition just a
few years ago.
He did point out a few areas for
improvment, including
increasing the rate of tax
collections, now 94 percent, and
more carefully and quickly
accounting for funds shifted from
one account to another within the
budget.
