The weather Monday: high 61,
low 54, hum. 85 percent, and by 7
am Tuesday .51 inches of rain had
fallen.
Perry Como has a lot of nice
things to say about Saluda and
NC in the December issue of
Carolina Senior Citizen. Como,
who has owned a home on top of
the mountain in Saluda for the
past 15 years, said he loves North
Carolina.
“Over in Saluda, all we have to
do up there is talk to
hummingbirds, but it’s beautiful.
We love it," he said. “I’m
amazed about North Carolina.
The people are so gentle. It's the
way I was brought up. I was born
in a town not much bigger than
Saluda—Cannonsburg, PA.“
Como said he particularly likes
the way his Saluda friends treat
him. “They know who I am. and
there’s no fuss, no bother, and I
can go around visiting a few
people.
“I have some wonderful
neighbors up there. That’s why I
like it too. We can have a drink
and it's so comfortble. Like our
friends Jack and Shirley Morse,
who live just down the road from
us. It’s Just a good place to go."

Rector To Retire
The Rector of Holy Cross
Episcopal Church in Tryon will
retire from the Ministry and
as Rector of Holy Cross at the end
of the month. A Festal Service
and reception will be held in his
honor next Sunday, December 9,
at 3:30 p.m. in the church, 316
Melrose Avenue. Tryon. The
people of the community are
cordially invited to attend.
Father Reynolds moved to
Tryon in 1980. He has been
especially active here in
charitable and philanthropic
areas of the community’s life as
well as in its religious life.
A native of New Orleans, he
received his education at
Amherst College, the General
Theological Seminary, the
University of the South, and
Oxford University in England. He
served parishes in Delaware and
in Maryland and began his
ministry of 40 years as Chaplain
at St. Andrews School in
Delaware.
He plans to live on the eastern
shore of Maryland. — Reporter

Pack Name. State’s Top Plant Operator
Ronnie Pack of Tryon, for Tryon in 1969. In 1982, he
superintendent of the Spindale became director of Public Works
Wastewater Treatment Plant, for the Town of Columbus, where
received the Wilbur E. Long
Wastewater Plant Operator of
the Year award at ceremonies in
High Point recently.
Wilbur E. Long was the first
chief of the NC Div. of
Environmental Mgmt. Water
Quality Eng. Branch. The awards
named after him have been given
annualy since 1975.
Pack began operating the
Spindale plant 2*2 years ago
when the plant was “in bad
shape,” according to Spindale
Town Admistrator Bill Penson.
Pack has in his tenure overseen
a $2.5 million renovation and
update which brought the plant
into compliance.
“He has improved the plant
one-thousand percent," Penson
said. “It is now one of the best in
the state. If there has ever been
anybody in the state who
deserves this award, he does."
Pack has 20 years experience
in his field, having begun working
he worked until taking the
position in Spindale.
Pack is a former secretary-
treasurer with the Western NC
Waterworks Assn. He served 2
terms on the membership
committee of the NC State
Waterworks Assn.
In Tryon, he is a member of
First Baptist Church, where he is
chairman of the youth, house and
grounds, and personnel
committees. He is a former
president of the Tryon High
School Athletic Boosters Club,
has coached little league for 12
years, and is currently the league
vice president, and president of
the Polk County Youth Football
League, in which he also serves
as a coach.
He is a volunteer fireman with
the Tryon Fire Dept, and was
named fireman of the year in
1977. He has served on the Fire
Dept ’s Parade Committee for 15
