There has been a rush put on by people seeking extra copies of the 1991 Budweiser Clydesdale calendar with the pictures taken in Polk County, and there aren’t any more available. The Tryon Riding & Hunt Club and The Lanier Quik Stop have each ordered another 100 copies and soon will have them available for sale, according to the Budweiser distributor in Asheville. When we commented on the calendar Monday, we wondered aloud what those guys were doing out in the countryside with that wagon load of beer. Well, Penny Kessler, owner of Jigsaw Farm, where the May/June calendar picture was taken, said she and her husband Chip were taking delivery of their summer order. They like to entertain. The Landrum Town Council meeting was not held Tues, night, its regularly scheduled time. The Town Council will meet instead, on Thursday, Dec. 13 at the Landrum Civic Center (old Depot). FENCE will present its annual “Home for the Holidays” concert Continued On Back Page Tryon Finances An ‘Unhappy Picture’ Town Manager Matthew Dolge said he was sorry to bring bad news so early in his tenure, but nonetheless presented the Town Council Mon. night with an “unhappy picture” of Tryon's current finances. Dolge said Tryon’s two water and sewer projects currently under contract are costing $111,000 more than was budgeted. As a result, he said the town’s Enterprise Fund may soon be depleted and transfers from the town’s General Fund may be needed. Enterprise is the account into which all water and sewer revenues are placed, and from which all water and sewer costs are supposed to be paid. Municipalities try to operate their water and sewer enterprises like a business, where revenues equal expenses. The depletion of all reserves in that account will likely signal the need for an icnrease in water and sewer rates, Dolge told the coun cil. In addition, Dolge reported Polk County landfill tipping fees, which are costing the town nearly $2,500 a month, are as yet unbudgeted. The council voted to wait and determine its actual costs before taking any action to recover tipping fees from town customers. They decided Mon night to continue that policy for the time being, despite the bad budget news. Dolge also said the town’s Continued On Back Page Robbery Suspect Caught In Lynn Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a male bank robbery suspect who was dressed like a woman after he lost control of his car and wound up in a ditch on Hwy. 108 just past Shehan’s Trailer Park in Lynn Tuesday around 3 p.m. The suspect, Jeffery Alan Britton, 36, of Asheville, was charged in an attempted armed robbery of Cooks Loan Co. in Campobello. Steve Cook, owner of Cooks Loan Co., said he was working alone in his office when a lady pulled up at 2:30 p.m and came in. She never said a word, and handed him a note which read: “I am desperate for money. I have an explosive devise in my pocketbook with a detonator. 1 will not hesitate to use this. Please don’t panic and no one will Continued On Back Page Plane Makes Forced Landing A plane which left Fairview- Airport in Campobello Monday night didn’t make it very far. The pilot, who airport office Charles Caldwell would not identify, had to make an emergency landing in a field next to I-26 at about the 3-mile marker, in Landrum. South Carolina State Police officials said there were no injuries and the pilot called a truck, which came and loaded the plane and hauled it back to the airport Mechanics at the airport Tuesday said the problem was probably the muffler, which caused the plane to lose power. Crash Details The crash which fatally injured Pamela Brown Greene of Tryon Saturday occured at 2:13 p.m., S.C. Highway Patrol said Tuesday. Greene's car collided with a car driven by Thomas Coggins of Spartanburg at the intersection of Blackstock Road and Mountainview Road in Spartanburg County. Greene was pronounced dead at 2:43 p.m. Monday.
