The weather Monday: high 69,
low 39, hum. 60 percent.
There has been a rush put on by
people seeking extra copies of the
1991 Budweiser Clydesdale
calendar with the pictures taken
in Polk County, and there aren’t
any more available.
The Tryon Riding & Hunt Club
and The Lanier Quik Stop have
each ordered another 100 copies
and soon will have them
available for sale, according to
the Budweiser distributor in
Asheville.
When we commented on the
calendar Monday, we wondered
aloud what those guys were doing
out in the countryside with that
wagon load of beer. Well, Penny
Kessler, owner of Jigsaw Farm,
where the May/June calendar
picture was taken, said she and
her husband Chip were taking
delivery of their summer order.

Tryon Finances An
‘Unhappy Picture’
Town Manager Matthew Dolge
said he was sorry to bring bad
news so early in his tenure, but
nonetheless presented the Town
Council Mon. night with an
“unhappy picture” of Tryon's
current finances.
Dolge said Tryon’s two water
and sewer projects currently
under contract are costing
$111,000 more than was budgeted.
As a result, he said the town’s
Enterprise Fund may soon be
depleted and transfers from the
town’s General Fund may be
needed.
Enterprise is the account into
which all water and sewer
revenues are placed, and from
which all water and sewer costs
are supposed to be paid.
Municipalities try to operate
their water and sewer
enterprises like a business,
where revenues equal expenses.
The depletion of all reserves in
that account will likely signal the
need for an icnrease in water and
sewer rates, Dolge told the coun
cil.
In addition, Dolge reported
Polk County landfill tipping fees,
which are costing the town nearly
$2,500 a month, are as yet
unbudgeted. The council voted to
wait and determine its actual
costs before taking any action to
recover tipping fees from town
customers. They decided Mon
night to continue that policy for
the time being, despite the bad
budget news.
Dolge also said the town’s

Robbery Suspect
Caught In Lynn
Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies
arrested a male bank robbery
suspect who was dressed like a
woman after he lost control of his
car and wound up in a ditch on
Hwy. 108 just past Shehan’s
Trailer Park in Lynn Tuesday
around 3 p.m.
The suspect, Jeffery Alan
Britton, 36, of Asheville, was
charged in an attempted armed
robbery of Cooks Loan Co. in
Campobello.
Steve Cook, owner of Cooks
Loan Co., said he was working
alone in his office when a lady
pulled up at 2:30 p.m and came
in. She never said a word, and
handed him a note which read:
“I am desperate for money. I
have an explosive devise in my
pocketbook with a detonator. 1
will not hesitate to use this.
Please don’t panic and no one will

Plane Makes
Forced Landing
A plane which left Fairview-
Airport in Campobello Monday
night didn’t make it very far.
The pilot, who airport office
Charles Caldwell would not
identify, had to make an
emergency landing in a field next
to I-26 at about the 3-mile
marker, in Landrum.
South Carolina State Police
officials said there were no
injuries and the pilot called a
truck, which came and loaded
the plane and hauled it back to
the airport Mechanics at the
airport Tuesday said the problem
was probably the muffler, which
caused the plane to lose power.
