The weather Tuesday: high 64,

Polk County is back in
business.
John Lewis, a well-known
county resident, has accepted the
position of county manager. With
John soon to be installed, the
county business will soon be in
solid, reliable hands.
And Matthew Dolge is now
firmly in charge of Tryon’s
business as the new Town
Manager. He displayed a
masterful control of the most
important issues at hand Monday
night, clearly laying out options
and alternatives for the Town
Council on the most pressing
issues.
Glenn Rhodes and Clarence
Henson, who served as interim
managers, are to be commended
on the job they did to keep things
running smoothly. Their service
gave both boards the time they
needed to make such favorable
choices in hiring.
The Landrum Town Council
will meet tonight at 7:30 pm in the
Landrum Civic Center (Old
Depot.)

Cable TV Rates Up,
Three Channels Added
The good news is: Cencom
Cable Television’s “full basic”
subscribers will have three new
satellite channels to choose from
in January.
The new channels are C-Span,
HA.!, and Cable Headline News,
C-Span features live and delayed
coverage of the U. S. House of
Representatives, call-in shows,
topical speakers and public
forums involving speakers of
national and international
stature.
HA! is a new comedy network,
and Cable Headline News
provides updated news every 30
minutes.
Also a local origination channel
will be added. Initially, Naes said
this channel will feature written
public service announcements
and advertisements continually
scrolling across the screen.
Cencom officer Carl Naes told the
Bulletin that he also has been
approached by persons
interesting in broadcasting local
events on this channel.
The bad news is: full basic
service is going to cost $24 more a
year, $2 more each month
starting Jan. 1, 1991, or $21.45 a
month. Monthly rates for all
other services will remain un
changed, Naes wrote to the Tryon
Town Council Nov. 30. Naes’
letter was included in the
council's consent agenda
Monday.
The current rate for basic cable
(channels 3-13), now $15.95, will

John W. Lewis, Jr. was named
Polk County Manager by the
board of commissioners
following an executive session
Tuesday.
The hiring of Lewis, who first
came to Polk County in
February, 1980 as manager of
Duke Power’s Tryon branch,
represented a desire on the part
of the board to create some
stability in the county’s top job.
“He has no county government
experience. That’s his only draw
back,” said commissioner Sue
Cochran. “But I read 20 resumes
and in looking at the other
applicants, some had lived in five
places in the last 15 years.
“John left Duke Power to stay
in this area,” Cochran said. “He
has a 10-year-old child. People
with children that age, tend to
stay in the same school system."
Lewis joined Coldwell Banker
Town & Country Realtors as a
sales agent in April, 1989.
Lewis was unavailable for
comment Wednesday, as were
board chairman Jeannie Martin,
