JAN. 11. 1991 20( Per Copy The weather Wednesday: high 80, low 37, hum. 83 percent. Thursday morning when we awoke, we saw the ten thousandth fog settling in like a blanket of smoke. Perhaps the skies mirrored the mood of a world facing war. Some news from the world of sports: Harold Stott said recently 7 that he’ll be back in the pits for the next Winston Cup racing season. You may recall from a November article in the Spartanburg Herald-Journal that Stott said he was considering quitting the sport. He was shaken by the death of a pit crew member after an accident at the Atlanta Journal 500. Stott changes tires for Spartanburg's Bud Moore Engineering racing team driver Morgan Shepherd. The man who was killed changed tires for Bill Eliott. After that, Stott said he may leave the sport he’s been a part of for 20 years. But this week, he said NASCAR had changed some rules, made things safer, and he’d be back. Speaking of NASCAR, we also learned this week that Robert Van Burskirk of Fox Haven Continued On Baek Page Hospital Expansion Continues With ICU St. Luke's Hospital Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to proceed with plans to construct a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and ground was broken in a ceremony Thursday. The new unit will replace the current 3-bed unit and will be equipped with the most advanced technology. The new six-bed, 4800 square foot ICU will mark the completion of the second phase of the master site plan for renovation and expansion of St. Luke’s Hospital. The master site plan was developed in 1989. The first phase, construction of a 000 square foot addition to house the CT Scanner, was completed last year. “The rapid advances in health- care technology have provided exceptional capabilities for small hospitals that were not available when St. Luke’s Hospital was constructed 18 years ago.” said I homas Bradshaw, hospital president. “Construction of the new unit will allow the hospital to continue providing excellent, comprehensive care to critical patients." The general contractor bids for the construction of the ICU have been reviewed with the low bid being submitted by Threatt- Michael Construction Company from Greenville. S.C. Threatt- Michael’s bid was $681,900 for the construction of the new ICU. The hospital board approved the selection of Threatt-Michael at Continued On Back Page At Art Gallery On exhibit now at the Tryon Fine Arts Gallery are the poignant portraits in oil by Eileen Fabian. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Eileen first studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Art. Mrs. Fabian last studied with the influential Russian teacher Ramon Chatove in Atlanta. Ga. Inspired by the old school of art. something that seems to be disappearing in today’s culture of microwave-instant results, Fabian’s painting style is realism with touches of impressionism. Mr. and Mrs. Fabian have lived in Brevard for about a year. The exhibit will continue thru Jan 31st. — Reporter Named To Dean’s List Lori Bagwell, a junior at the University of Tennessee, has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester. She is majoring in Spanish. Dori is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bagwell and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Hayes of Landrum. “The Lions In Winter” Cast Auditions for TLT's next production. “The Lion In Winter.” having been completed. Marianne Brown, director of the play, announces the cast as follows: Henry II. King of England — Bill Raker; Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry’s wife — Christine Fitch; Richard Lionheart, the oldest son — Denis Schuldenfrei; Geoffrey, the middle son — Doug Brannon; John, the youngest son — Olin Cobb; Alais, a French Princess — Katie Malone; Philip, King of France — Ron Campbell; Lady in-Waiting — Eletrra. The play will be presented at TFAC February 28, March 1, 2 and 3. Mail order tickets will be available prior to the opening of the box office. Watch for the announcment in this paper. The box office itself will open February 18. Tickets will cost $6. — Reporter 176 Reopened Highway 176 is open again between Tryon and Saluda. The road was closed Jan. 2 when a boulder fell onto the roadway just below Melrose Junction. Workers reopened the road Wednesday at midday, after spending the week dynamiting the boulder to bits and repairing the road surfaces.
