The weather Wednesday: high
80, low 37, hum. 83 percent.
Thursday morning when we
awoke, we saw the ten
thousandth fog settling in like a
blanket of smoke.
Perhaps the skies mirrored the
mood of a world facing war.
Some news from the world of
sports: Harold Stott said recently 7
that he’ll be back in the pits for
the next Winston Cup racing
season.
You may recall from a
November article in the
Spartanburg Herald-Journal that
Stott said he was considering
quitting the sport. He was
shaken by the death of a pit crew
member after an accident at the
Atlanta Journal 500.
Stott changes tires for
Spartanburg's Bud Moore
Engineering racing team driver
Morgan Shepherd. The man who
was killed changed tires for Bill

Hospital Expansion
Continues With ICU
St. Luke's Hospital Board of
Trustees has voted unanimously
to proceed with plans to construct
a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
and ground was broken in a
ceremony Thursday. The new
unit will replace the current 3-bed
unit and will be equipped with the
most advanced technology.
The new six-bed, 4800 square
foot ICU will mark the
completion of the second phase of
the master site plan for
renovation and expansion of St.
Luke’s Hospital. The master site
plan was developed in 1989. The
first phase, construction of a 000
square foot addition to house the
CT Scanner, was completed last
year.
“The rapid advances in health-
care technology have provided
exceptional capabilities for small
hospitals that were not available
when St. Luke’s Hospital was
constructed 18 years ago.” said
I homas Bradshaw, hospital
president. “Construction of the
new unit will allow the hospital to
continue providing excellent,
comprehensive care to critical
patients."
The general contractor bids for
the construction of the ICU have
been reviewed with the low bid
being submitted by Threatt-
Michael Construction Company
from Greenville. S.C. Threatt-
Michael’s bid was $681,900 for the
construction of the new ICU. The
hospital board approved the
selection of Threatt-Michael at

Highway 176 is open again
between Tryon and Saluda.
The road was closed Jan. 2
when a boulder fell onto the
roadway just below Melrose
Junction. Workers reopened the
road Wednesday at midday, after
spending the week dynamiting
the boulder to bits and repairing
the road surfaces.
