Life in Polk County went on as
usual Thursday morning, though
28 nations were engaging Iraqi
forces in the Middle East.
Perhaps even a sense of release
pervaded the mood, after five
months of building tension. Now
it was finally underway.
When we visited, some students
at Polk Central were watching
the broadcast of a 9 am.
Pentagon press conference, while
others packed the library for an
American Legion Oratorical
Contest on the Constitution and
Bll of Rights.
That's how it will be for awhile.
When normal pursuits do not
demand our attention, we will
watch a war. probably for weeks
to come, and we will become
engrossed in the details of
targets, strikes, and strategies.
Just hours after the pre-dawn
beginnings, what Defense
Secretary called “not even the
end of the beginning.” the news
was positive. Our nation’s
leaders commented that the U. N.
forces were able to carry out
their united strategy, under U.S.
command, with little or no
harrassment from the Iraqi
military.
In light of the non-existant

Wrestlers Earn 2nd
Conference Title
Since the merging of Tryon and
Polk Central’s sports programs
three years ago, few teams have
had the success of head coach
Larry Foster and this wrestling
team.
On Monday. January 14. the
Polk County Wrestling
Wolverines won their second
consecutive conference
championship by defeating
Edneyville 43-30. Coach Foster
explained “Our kids knew what
they had to do and they did it.”
Last year the team went 19-5
with an unblemished 6-0 record in
the conference, but lost some key
players to graduation. “Last year
we relied on strength and
experience,” said Foster. This
year we relay on good work
ethics and effort.”
The young Wolverines
currently own a respectable 9-7
record with a 3-0 mark in the
conference. Made up of mostly
freshman and sophomores, the
team looks to returning wrestlers
for leadership. Derek Pack
(second in state last year), Keith
Painter (fourth in state), and
Matt Davis “spend alot of time
and really support our
newcomers,” explained Foster.
Other returnees include Joey
Couch (103), Ricky Miller (112),
and Eric Waddell (171).
Since there is only a limited
number of 1A teams in which to
wrestle, the Wolverines schedule
many 3A and 4A high schools.
Earlier in the season Polk County
