Polk County Board of Education Meets The regular monthly meeting of the Polk County Board of Education will be Monday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 pm in the Stearns Board Room. TRYON. N. C. 28782 Social Services Comments on Trial The trial of James Christopher Tucker, convicted Friday of second degree murder in the death of his son, raised many questions about the lack of pro tection for the child. Witnesses testified that Nathan Adam Hill repeatedly was abused and neglected dur ing his short life. It was also brought out in the trial that the Polk County Department of Social Services (DSS) had investigated those claims. On Monday, DSS director Sue Rhodes issued the following statement regarding the case of Nathan Adam Hill: "Immediately following the discovery of the death of this child, the Polk County Social Services director notified the regional office and requested the protective service case on the child be reviewed by the N.C. Division of Social Ser vices. The review was promptly initiated and was completed by a team from both the central office and regional office staff of the N.C. Divi sion of Social Services. "Their in-depth review of the case determined that the Polk County Department of Social Services thoroughly investi gated all complaints received according to child protective services policy and in com pliance with N.C. General Sta tutes. It also determined that the (Continued On Back Page) WEDNESDAY, FEB. 6, 1991 Tucker Receives Life Sentence by Michael B. Smith Superior Court Judge Zoro Guice on Monday morning handed down his sentence for James Christopher Tucker. Tucker stood before Guice with tear-filled eyes and listened as he was sentenced to life impris onment in the N.C. Department of Corrections. The verdict of guilty came Friday night in the Polk County courthouse following a one hour and ten minute jury delib eration. Tucker was found guilty of second degree murder in the death of his son, Nathan Adam Hill. The two-year-old died on Dec. 3, 1989. One juror said that the jury had no doubt that Tucker was guilty, but also noted that the members felt the father was not the only one who abused the child. Judge Guice told Tucker that he had never been involved in a case where more cruelty was involved. "The evidence of your guilt was just overwhelming," said Guice. On Friday afternoon, defense attorney Roy Neill began clo sing arguments by suggesting that the evidence was inconclu sive. He said that the tape around Adam's buried body had been cut during excavation and that perhaps a shovel had caused the internal injuries (Continued On Back Page) 20^ Per Copy Bradley Family Burned Out The home of Jeff and Melia Bradley on Warrior Mtn. Road, Saluda, was completely destroyed by fire Friday, Feb. 1 around 11:30 am. According to reports, a Duke Power employee saw flames and called the Henderson County Sheriff's Depl. The Blue Ridge and Saluda Volunteer Fire Depts, responded. Jerry Pace, Saluda's Fire Chief, reported the home was engulfed in flames on their arrival. The action was taken by the Polk County Board of Commissioners, after another in a series of public hearings on naming roads in the county as part of setting up the Emergency- 911 calling system.
