The Polk County Board of Education meets tonight at 6:30 in the Stearns Board Room. The Tryon Town Council meets toniglit at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall. We carried two letters about the Association for County Taxpayers (ACT) Friday which were almost humorous in the range of their opinions. One had to note that both were rather extreme, a trait this group seems to bring out in people. One letter writer wanted to simply "get shut of" the whole group - "all twelve of them" - by taking up a collection to send them to Raleigh. He cites as justification the "bad apple in the banel" theorem. The other was absurd in its characterization of the "prob lems" ACT has been fighting so vociferously. The next match will be at the home of Bill Bley on Feb. 18. 16 Pages Today 20C Per Copy Operation Desert Prayer Every Wednesday at 12:15 p.m., there will be a brief ser vice of support for our troops in the Middle East at the Church of the Holy Cross. Prayers for peace and intercessions for our service men and women will be central in the service. Names of all service men and women will be read by a uni formed officer. Tire ministers of all churches in this area are invited to take part in this spe cial community service. Dr. Dudley Stroup, Rector of the Church of the Holy Cross, stated a large congregation attended the first of the ser vices. Those who attend arc invited to bring a sandwich.
