High School Tuesday, and
men's golf and varsity baseball
teams will each scrimmage
tomorrow. Soon, the seasons
will be underway.
The Church of the Holy Cross
in Tryon has been full each
Wednesday at noon as people of
all denominations have gathered
to pray for loved ones and for
peace.
Today, they will gather at
12:15 p.m. to offer thanks for
the peace that has come in the
Persian Gulf. To that prayer,
we would add one another: let it
last and spread throughout that
region.

Bell, Pace, Win
County Spelling Bee
Stephen Bell and Patricia Jo
Pace, two eighth graders from
Saluda School, won the Polk
County Spelling Bec on Febru
ary 26 at Stearns Education
Center in Columbus.
The ten other challengers, all
champions and runners-up
from grades 4-8 in their indi
vidual schools, were eliminated
only after several hard-fought
rounds. They were, respec
tively, Michael Barnes and Cliff
Gordon from Green Creek, Jessi
Bromwell and Donnie McCraw
from Mill Spring; Joe King and
Dwayne Bolt from Polk Cen
tral, Wendy Yon and Crystal
Bailey from Sunny View, and
Hannah Rogers and Benji
McCall from Tryon Elemen
tary.
Among words which stumped
these young experts were noble,
extinct, chalice, coordinate,
bandanna and parquet.
When a member of the
audience raised a question
regarding an alternate spelling
o{ judgment, the judges allowed
Pace, who had been disqualified
with judgement, to reenter the
contest, which was down to
four contestants.
Next, Wendy Yon, the Sunny
View champion, missed pur
loin, and Dwayne Bolt, the run
ner-up from Polk Central,
misspelled tenement, leaving
only Pace and Bell. For several
rounds both finalists misspelled
such words as tarpaulin, lepre
chaun, madrilene, comradery,

demy. He is also a graduate of
the University of South Caro
lina School of Business and is
presently completing his Mas
ters Degree in Epidemiology

Swim Club Deadline
Monday, March 11, is the
deadline for making reserva
tions for the Tryon Swim Club
luncheon which is being held in
conjunction with the club's
annual meeting at Brannon's
Restaurant on Thursday, March
14. Members planning to attend
should notify Sally Hollwcg at
859-6139.
A punch bowl social is
planned for noon. Lunch will be
served at 12:30 with the meet
ing scheduled to state at 1:30.

Festivities at TCC
On Sunday, March 17 from 5
to 7 p.m. there will be a gath
ering of the clans at the Tryon
Country Club to celebrate in a
proper fashion this noteworthy
day.
Corned beef sandwiches,
dessert and coffee will be
served. For those wishing to
add the appropriate liba
tions—BYOB.

There will be a meeting of all
managers and coaches of Polk
County Little League and
Senior League Teams. Anyone
interested in managing or
coaching a team please plan to
attend on March 11 at 7 p.m. at
the Tryon Town Hall. All man
agers from last season must
