You remember geometry, all of which springs from Euclid's axiom that given a line and a point not on that line, there is only one line which can travel through (hat point and never intersect the first line. Of course, the axiom works in the real world and geometry has been quite useful. Nonethe less, scholars have for decades tried to formally prove the axiom - not relying upon logic alone - and they have been unsuccessful because it deals with infinity. In fact, a new, "non-Euclidian" geometry was the result of their efforts. So, in other words, you can't really prove geometry, guys. Take the day off. Participants in basketball, wrestling, indoor track and cheerleading will be recognized. Columbus Considers Hiring New Officer Columbus, concerned about recent break-ins at the Western Steer Family Steakhouse and other crimes, is considering hiring another fulltime police officer. The town now employs two officers, Chief Billy Stepp and Officer Chris Abril. At its meeting Thursday night, the council instructed Town Administrator Butch Smith to determine the cost of hiring an additional officer. Smith will also explore ways of paying that cost, either through property tax increases, or increases in water and sewer fees. In other business, the council: * asked Smith to contact the local delegation to the General Assembly to determine whether or not Columbus can begin a hotel tax. • decided to donate $50 to the Veteran of Foreign Wars for a local "welcome home" celebra tion now being planned for Desert Storm troops. * decided to sell the old town Christmas lights. Bee Meeting March 12th at 7:30 p.m. the Foothills Bee Association will hold its monthly meeting at the Polk County Agricultural Extension Office in Columbus. These meetings are open to the public who desire to know more about our beautiful friends, "The Honey Bec". Les Spangler, one of our local master bee keepers will demon strate how he raises "Queen Bees". A healthy and produc tive hive needs a strong Queen. Nature has its way of producing a new queen when needed. A bee keeper can assist this pro cess by replacing the queen every few years, thus keeping production at a peak.
