The weather Monday: high

Demos Chapman was work
ing in his wood shop recently
when he can across a piece of
oak with a knot in it which
resembles a monkey's face plain
as day. Chapman, who will
have lived in Tryon for 72 years
in April, framed the wood block
and has hung it in his home.
It's Super Saturday in Tryon
this Saturday, when the Chil
dren's Theater Festival brings
numerous performers to town.
The Tryon Congregational
Church will continue its 100th
anniversary year celebration
with a Bach Festival Sunday,
March 17 at 4 p.m. The concert
will be directed by Joseph
Erwin, minister of music.
Dr. Andy Rogers will offer a
lecture on William Butler Yeats:

It's Official!
Polk County High
The new high school was
officially named Polk County
High School by the Board of
Education Monday.
However, the board post
poned naming the new elemen-
tary/middle school that will be
at Polk Central.
Polk County High School was
suggested most (136) on the
"Name Our New Schools!"
forms sent out through students
and local businesses, followed
by Bryan Womack High School
(44) and Tony Waldrop High
School (26).
"I'm pleased with Polk
County High School myself,"
said school board chairman
Georgia Pack.
The School Name Committee
suggested that since there was
such interest in Bryant Womack
and Tony Waldrop that the
school board might consider
naming a building or area of the
new high school after them,
Superintendent James Causby
said.
Womack was a World War II
hero from Polk County who
received the Congressional
medal of honor. Tony Waldrop
was a Polk Central graduate and
model student who made a
name for himself in track at the
University of North Carolina in
the 1970's.
Board member Geoffrey Bal-
kam, who was a member of the
School Name Committee,
reported that he was quite
pleased with the hard work of

Cameron Fitch Plays
Lead in "Carousel"
Cameron Fitch, who is an
AFS Exchange student in New
Zealand has been chosen to play
the lead 'in "Carousel". The
musical is being put on by joint
colleges in Wellington - St.
Patrick's College for Boys,
where Cameron is going to
school, and St. Catherine's Girls
College.
The production, already in
rehearsal, will take place about
three weeks before Cameron
returns home at the end of June.
Cameron is playing the role of
Billy Bigelow, which has spe
cial sentiment for his parents,
Stephen and Christine Fitch, as
Billy was Stephen's first leading
role on Broadway. He ulti-
^ely P la y ed Billy for over
1500 performances.
Cameron, who has been seen
in many TLT, Barn Door, and
Tryon Youth musicals, won his
role in open auditions and is
very thrilled to be doing it.

No Public Hearing
For Tuition Issue
There was no second Monday
night to a motion by School
Board member Geoffrey Bal
kan! requesting a public hearing
within the next two months on
the issue of higher tuition for
South Carolina students attend
ing Polk County Schools.
"The board asked me to look
into it (the issue of charging
higher tuition) and I have,"
Balkam said. "I think there is
justification to hear what the
county has to say about the
issue."
"I'm not in favor of it," said
board chairman Georgia Pack.
"The South Carolina student
policy we have now was looked
into and discussed and I'm not
in favor of a public hearing."
Balkam pointed out that South
Carolina is going to $4,000 for
tuition for out-of-state stu
dents. He added that Spartan
burg District One allows Lake
Lanier students to go to Lan
drum schools and they arc given
a tax subsidy by Greenville
County.
"I don't know what you all are
afraid of, to open this up tc
public sentiment," said Balkam.
"If after the hearing takes place
and the board feels the same
way, then I'll back off," he said.
"You say you're surprised we
(the rest of the school board)
say no; we're surprised you
would suggest a public hear
ing," said Phillip Feagan.
Feagan pointed out that he has
been part of public hearings in
